Perks Of Being A 21-Year-Old "Grandma"

Have you ever taken a BuzzFeed quiz? I find myself dying to know my type of guy, what kind of dessert I am, the number of kids I'll have, what flavor of Pop-Tart I should eat and so on. As I was scrolling through BuzzFeed the other day, I came across a quiz titled "What Is Your Grandma Percentage?" I'm always getting made fun of for being a 21-year-old "grandma." I believe this stems from my 10 o'clock bedtime, disinterest in partying, love of black coffee, always having to plan my week out and the fact that most of my wardrobe comes from Gap and Target, just to name a few. While this lifestyle isn't appealing to most 21-year-olds, I love it, and here are a few reasons you should, too.

1. I'm rarely tired.

Going to bed early allows you to wake up refreshed and ready for the day. After a good night sleep, not only will your body be ready to wake up in the morning, you will make it through the day without getting tired. Another good reason to go to bed early is that your body recovers while you sleep. Sleeping helps your brain reset and muscles recover which, if you're an athlete like me, is very important. Try this and I promise 99 percent of you will agree you feel better.

2. I've developed mad baking skills.

Baking is a skill everyone should develop. Do you like dessert? Do you want to make friends? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you need to put your apron on and get to work. Why wait to go to Grandma's house for those fresh-baked cookies when you can make them yourself!

3. Gap has awesome clothes...seriously.

Do you like to look amazing and be comfortable at the same time? I do! Clothes that are simple are easy to pair in different ways. You can also dress them up with a nice necklace or scarf and be good to go for any event. I'm in college, and taking the time to look nice is hard. Most of the time I would rather be wearing spandex or sweats, but some occasions call for a nicer look. Well, Gap-type clothes are easy to look nice in and are as comfortable as wearing sweats. It's a win-win situation people. You can't go wrong.

4. My hobbies are lifelong.

I am in my prime to try anything and everything. Hobbies come and go when we're young but tend to stay when we get old. I have tried many hobbies, to include knitting, painting, reading, running, baking, coin collecting, hiking and coloring. I have enjoyed some and haven't others. Things like baking, reading, painting and knitting are hobbies I can do for the rest of my life. They are enjoyable, and I feel relaxed when doing them. Don't shy away from "grandma" type hobbies because they can be just as fun.

5. I'm already good at adulting.

I love planning my week out. I sit down with a good cup of coffee on Sunday afternoon and look at the week ahead. This is super relaxing, and nothing during my hectic week will catch me by surprise. This is a great skill to develop in college and carry throughout your life. Before we know it, we will all be 30-somethings with families and much more to plan than we have now. So why wouldn't you get a jump start on life?! The skill of planning and organizing your week will help you for the rest of your life.

Don't be afraid to be a 21-year-old "grandma." You will be more prepared for life, and that can only be a good thing. If you are already living the "grandma" lifestyle, remember that you aren't alone! We "grandmas" are right here with you, we just don't get out enough to cross paths.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
