I am from a small town and moving to a big city to go to college was the scariest thing ever. I remember when I got my letter of acceptance and how excited I was. I could not wait to leave my small little town. The closer it got to move-in day the more nervous I got. Here are the 3 ways moving from a small town to a city changed me.
1.) Not knowing everyone- In my hometown everybody knew everybody, so going from knowing everyone in my town to knowing exactly 4 people on campus was a drastic change. It was a change for the better though. If I would have stayed back I would not have met some of the people I have grown close with.
2.) Not having my family with me- I am such a daddy's girl so when my family left me I cried for hours and my family barely made it back home before I called them crying and told them to come back and get me. Yes, I was overreacting but in the moment I truly felt like I couldn't do it and I needed to go home. Now, I still get a little homesick but it makes going home and seeing my family so much more special.
3.) Not having my friends with me- I have had the same 3 best friends since junior high so you can imagine how hard it was to see all of them go to the same school and me be a few hours away all alone. I was worried that they would forget about me but I was so wrong. We talk daily and they are super supportive of me and I am so thankful for them. Not having them here with me has forced me to find other people to do dumb stuff with, but I know they will be there when I go back home.
Sometimes I still get sad and homesick and that is okay because I have people back home that are rooting for me and now people at school that are helping and supporting me everyday. Moving a few hours away from home is one of the best decisions I have made, the first couple of days I couldn't see it but now I do. For anyone who thinks they can't do it and feel like giving up, don't. Take your time, meet new people, get involved in clubs, go do things with other people from your hall. It will get better.
