I'm Not PC, But Even I Think We Should Stop Saying These Things

It's not about being politically correct, it's about being respectful.

There is definitely a fine line between political correctness, or PC, and overreacting. I certainly don't consider myself PC, but I still have respect for all walks of life and believe we should treat everyone equally.

That being said, there are several sayings that I do not approve of that I hear frequently. I am not sure how these became part of our daily lives, but I think its time to put an end to these sayings. If we ever needed PC, it is here:

1. "You just gave me cancer."

There are variations of this of course, but anything revolving around Cancer for humorous/sarcastic results is downright wrong. Studies show 1/2 men and 1/3 women will develop cancer at some point in their lives. On top of that, we all know someone who is or has battled cancer. If you want to joke about something that affects your health, there are many more options that are far less offensive.

2. "I'm going to kill myself."

Mental health is no joke. Luckily for us, awareness has been on the rise. The saddening part is that this saying is also on the rise. I get it, we all do embarrassing things were we want to go hide our faces. But you should say just that. Don't joke about something that people are battling every day with.

3. The "R" Word

This is another word that has been on the rise in recent years. It was just a part of our daily lives, I understand that. We probably called something this around our friends throughout all of our school years. However, it's time we move past this. Songs need to stop using them. It's as equally offensive as some race words are. We need to erase this word from our vocabulary.

4. "You're adopted."

I've never really understand this one. What about adoption is a joke? This is used as a joke to infer that someone's parents do not love them. If you think that is the case, you're dead wrong.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
