Parents Versus Technology

For those of you that don't understand technology, know that you aren't alone.

Honestly, there is nothing I find funnier than an adult attempting to understand a smartphone. Let me give the disclaimer that I'm not an apple genius by any means, but I do understand how to work an iPhone. Odds are, if you are under the age of thirty, you know how to work one too. Using a smartphone is probably common sense to you because you couldn't live your life without one. But to adults, they may as well be figuring out how to get a rocket to the moon.

The following questions and statements are things that my mother, who is over 30 and obviously does not understand technology, has asked me or told me about her phone. If you have parents who also don't understand technology, these are questions you probably get asked daily.

So without further ado, I give you questions my mom has asked me in the year she's had her smartphone.

How do I turn this thing on?

How can the screen be black but not off?

How do I turn it off and charge it at the same time?

How can I get on the Instagram?

I meant to text you, not email you.

And the fact that you had to type in an email address didn't tip you off that it wasn't a text, Mom?

So the Mail thing isn't for text messages?

I accidentally called and it showed my face!

That's called FaceTime, Mom... you can call on smartphones without showing your face, I promise.

Can you make me a tweeter thing?

I want to take a picture, not open the camera! How do I take a picture without opening it?

How do you make a phone call without dialing the number every time? I just always type the

number in...

How come every time I turn my phone off, it takes a picture?

Because you are taking a screenshot, meaning you aren't pressing the right buttons to turn it off.

So I can send a text to more than one person at the same time? And they see who else got it?

How do I get apps?

What do I do if I don't know my password for iTunes?

I have to update stuff? It doesn't do it itself?

How do I get music on this thing?

Why are the apps shaking? I just wanted you to move them into folders!

How do I know if I'm on Wi-Fi?

What's a group message? I don't know all this terminology!

What's a good angle for a selfie?

You're too old for selfies mom, so there is no good angle.

What happens if I accidentally send 11 Snapchats?

How do you accidentally send 11 Snapchats is the real question, Mom.

They can see when I text? How can they do that?

Why does my phone talk to me if I press this button?

What's a lock screen?

The picture is blurry. Why is it blurry?

It's called focusing the picture... that thing you don't do before you take one.

There's a GPS map on here?

How do I screenshot a video?

What if I don't want a touch code on my phone?

The sad thing is, these are all 100 percent legitimate questions my mother has asked me about her iPhone 5s in the year that she has had it. It should be a law that all people over the age of 40 have to take a technology class.

In case you didn't believe me here is your proof that my mother does not understand technology:

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
