Painting: A New Favorite Past Time

From mind to canvas.

Painting: A New Favorite Past Time

It seems as if painting is gaining more and more popularity as time goes on. I used to think that painting was something I would never ever do. In fact, even during my time at community college, my art teacher suggested I try a painting class… I was always quick to say, “No!” I never imagined feeling comfortable and relaxed picking up a paintbrush, dipping it in some paint and applying it to the canvas. I thought painting was something I would never be even half way decent at. I never imagined I would be giving canvas paintings I had done as Christmas and birthday presents or that they would soon cover my walls. Painting is something I would recommend to just about anyone.

1. Painting is relaxing.

You can paint in a pure quiet room or one with your favorite music or Netflix show playing. You can paint outside on a sunny day. It doesn’t matter how or where you do it. And it doesn’t matter if the piece you are doing is something simple or extravagant. As long as you take a minute or two to yourself that’s what matters.

2. Painting is creative.

It does not matter if you end up liking what you have painted or not. And it doesn’t even matter if you look to Pinterest for inspiration as long as you add a little bit of your own flair to it. Painting is something that no matter what two pieces won’t ever turn out identical. It’s honestly not possible. Nothing will ever look exactly the same among two paintings.

3. Painting is cheap.

Depending on the type of canvas or paint you end up choosing, painting canvases can be one of the cheapest past times ever. Painting can honestly cost you around five dollars if you look right. Depending on the type of paint sometimes if you look hard enough you can honestly find paint as cheap as fifty cents per bottle. Painting is something I don’t feel guilty about doing as a college student.

4. Painting is memorable.

No matter how the painting turns out or if you choose to keep it for yourself or give it as a gift, you are still going to remember it. You are going to remember the time it took and how it turned out. I absolutely love nearly every painting I have done. I haven’t found one yet that I really don’t like. However, though a few of them have caused me stress.

If you are looking for something relaxing to do, something that is creative, and something that is cheap while being memorable, I think canvas painting is for you. Some of the most relaxing moments I have had have been painting a canvas. It gives you a chance to spark your imagination and be creative. It literally never costs me over five dollars to do one canvas. And the paint lasts forever. I definitely cherish the paintings I have done and the memories that come with it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
