In just a few weeks I will be packing up and heading to Ireland, and as excited as I am, packing always gives me a bit of anxiety. I don’t want to over-pack and end up carrying around a lot more than what I need, but I don’t want to under pack either. So after a little thought, I decided to compile a list of the most important packing tips and tricks!
1. Roll, Don't Fold
My parents taught me this trick growing up and it has always stuck! It seems so simple, rolling your clothes rather than folding them, but it really makes a huge impact when you are trying to save space in your bags. It also helps with preventing really bad wrinkles, so that is a double win!
2. Pack The Essentials, Only!
I know, this is way easier said than done. But really make an effort to pack just the things you need and nothing more. Worse case scenario you can buy something that you really need in an emergency, but other than that you will survive without it!
3. You Don't Need 7 Pairs Of Shoes.
Not going to lie, shoes are probably my biggest weakness. I could bring a different pair for every day that I am gone and not think twice, but this is such a waste of space and weight in your bags. You really only need maybe three pairs of shoes for any trip: comfortable walking shoes, sandals or boots (depending on the time of year), and nice shoes for going out, that’s it!
4. Always Pack Your Carry-On With An Extra Outfit, Or Two!
A few years ago I went to China for 14 days and for 4 days of that trip I didn’t have clothes. Like, none. Nada. Zip. Nothing. Not even underwear. It was miserable! I made the mistake of trying to make my carry-on a little lighter so I didn’t have to drag it around all the airports, and when my flight got sent to South Korea due to a Typhoon, all my luggage was a goner. So lesson learned: Always pack extra clothes in your carry-on in case there is a mishap with the luggage, and this is especially important if you are flying with multiple connections.
5. Pack Outfits, Not Just Clothes
To avoid over packing, I tend to pack entire outfits. This helps me make sure I am not just packing 12 shirts because I like them, but maybe 6 shirts that I can layer with a scarf, jacket, or cardigan and make into a completely different outfit. You don’t need 10 pairs of jeans for a 10-day trip. Bring 3, maybe 4 bottoms that you can mix and match with tops for the entire trip.
6. The 3-1-1 Rule
I am sure we have all been told this, but just another reminder that the liquids policy for carry-ons for most airlines follows the 3-1-1 rule, meaning your liquid containers must be smaller than 3.4 ounces, fit into one quart sized zip-lock bag, and you are only allowed one per traveler. With this being said, you can always wait and buy the majority of liquids (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc.) once you get to your destination. Also, make sure you put this in the front of your bag in an easy to get to spot so you can reach in and grab it quickly when going through security.
7. Don't Over-Pinterest It!
I never thought I would say this, but let's leave Pinterest out of the equation. I know, Pinterest is often a lifesaver, I get it! But when trying to pack light, it can often get in the way of things. You find all these cute outfits you think you need, but will never wear. You find all these gadgets that are absolutely essential, but never actually get used cause you’re busy traveling. So keep it simple. Make a list of the things you use daily at home and only bring those. That will be all that you need on your trip!
8. Save Space
Leave some room for souvenirs! It is easy to get carried away when packing and feel the need to pack your bags to the top because you have space now, but trust me, by the end of your trip you will be needing more room for all the extras you picked up along the way.
Hopefully, with these tips and tricks in mind, you will have a much easier time getting ready for all your travels this summer! Safe travels everyone!
