To The Overwhelmed College Student: You Are Normal

We're all on the struggle bus together.

OK, just take a second to breathe and hear me out.

You're exhausted. Coffee just doesn't really seem to help anymore; it's just vanilla flavored tar.

The only burst of energy you get is when you and your friends rush around to scarf down that glorious cafeteria food. It seems like only five minutes have gone by and suddenly you're back in your room or the library, studying for who even knows what class at this point. They all seem to blend together. You've been staring at the same page for five minutes.

This isn't anything like you thought it would be; high school seemed tough at the time, but now that you're looking back you wanna punch senior you in the face for taking study halls and free periods for granted.

Nothing like the smiling brochures or laughter of orientation week? I'm reading your mind right now because I was in the same position. OK, that's a lie, I still am. I went to bed at 4 a.m. to study for my quiz and I've been locked in the library since my classes ended for the day. I don't know when I'm going to eat dinner or manage to squeeze in a workout but as far as my mom is concerned when I call her on the phone I am TOTALLY FINE.

Welcome to college, where for the next four years you will simultaneously feel superhuman and like something straight out the local sewer. This isn't a sappy "it gets better" speech, but more of a realistic phrase. You will adapt. Slowly, you will manage to get your life together and know what learning style fits you the best, what time is the most productive for you to get your homework done and how to remind yourself that you are actually doing better than you think.

I think the most comforting aspect is that we are all simultaneously struggling, and the best friends that you will make are the ones that will stay up with you while you try to cram for that exam you totally forgot about. But you'll also go out together and try to be ~social~ college students and you'll have a blast.

All rambling aside, you will find your balance. And you will also have specific weeks in the semester where you'll feel like ripping your hair out because every professor decided to throw assignments at you at once. But then you have a whole weekend to celebrate once it's over! And you can breathe slightly for two weeks until it resets.

You're not alone, in the least cheesiest sense of the phrase.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
