With the holidays quickly approaching, it's difficult to deal with the accumulated losses we have experienced, especially at this time. A time of happiness and cheer slightly clouded by the gloom of emptiness knowing certain things will just never be the same.
We all experience loss sometime in our lives. The effect it may have on our lives varies. This is typically measured by the value that something or someone may have on us. It usually hits by surprise, unexpected and unrelenting. Losing something or someone is not easy by any means, mostly because it catches us off guard leaving us with regrets and makes us wish we would've been better or different. Alone with only ourselves to talk to we are left thinking "What if? What if I had done something different, something more, something that could’ve prevented this?” We’ve all had those thoughts cross our minds because as humans we are flawed in the fact that we want what we can’t have and forget to want what we already do have.
You see the thing about losing something/someone is that there is no guide because we are never prepared with the idea that this time might be the last time. Losing something makes us feel alone and misunderstood because everyone deals with it differently. The variety of possible reactions that come from people cause us to become closed off, we often don’t talk about it, pushing it aside and covering it with other feelings because sometimes we refuse to accept pain, because accepting the pain means admitting that it’s real. And sometimes reality is the hardest part to understand. Losing a family member, losing a love, losing a friend. The worst part of experiencing loss isn’t necessarily that something is gone but that a part of you has gone along with it.
Thus, we know that it’s an inevitable part of life and it’s never going to change. It’s easy to tell a person to appreciate the people in our lives however, the truly difficult task is to live a life of full appreciation of the people and the things that our lives do consist of. We are never prepared to say goodbye or to let go because the thought of having to do so has never crossed our minds. Nonetheless, if we were to live a life of full appreciation it would resemble something like a life of living in fear, never knowing when something is going to be stripped from you.
Therefore, it’s important to find a medium, to appreciate things without having to live in constant distress, living freely and fully knowing that life doesn’t make sense always because certain things are out of our control. Time can heal all wounds no matter how earth shattering and heart breaking they may be.
Everything does happen for a reason because there is a higher power -whoever that may be to you- that does have a plan. We are all put on earth for a purpose and we are not faced with obstacles that we can't overcome.
