Outrage in Chicago: A New Level of Hate

A recent attack in Chicago becomes a hate crime - when will it stop?

Outrage in Chicago: A New Level of Hate
Huffington Post

I’ll cut right to the chase. I was beyond shocked to find out what happened Tuesday afternoon in my hometown, Chicago.

As almost everyone begins to wind down from the election, some people find other ways to continue their message of hate for the new President-elect through racism. This deplorable act brought a new viewpoint to what I thought of my city.

If you don’t already know what happened, the unidentified teen victim, who was known to have special needs, was kidnapped by Hill, one on the perpetrators, and taken for multiple days. Just this past Tuesday, the unidentified victim was tied up and gagged in a West Chicago home. The incident was reported when a Facebook Live video appeared, with 4 of the suspects began beating, harassing, spitting on, kicking, stabbing, slashing the victim, and even verbal abuse about the man’s mental state. The set of events was reported to go on for multiple hours, but the video posted online only contains 30 minutes of the attacks. Facebook said it pulled the original video from a suspect's Facebook profile in this statement:

"We do not allow people to celebrate or glorify crimes on Facebook and have removed the original video for this reason. In many instances, though, when people share this type of content, they are doing so to condemn violence or raise awareness about it. In that case, the video would be allowed."

I hear about the hundreds of deaths and murders that occur in the Greater Chicagoland each year. But, this was a real eye-opener for the city. This was no death or murder. This was a racial attack carried out on a mentally ill teenager, who shouldn’t have been looked down on in the first place for sharing his political views.

This hate crime brings one thing to my mind: “What has happened to you, America?”

We are a nation where racism has become too big of an issue. We should not have the “Divided States of America,” but rather come together where there is no racial tension, and there are no interracial disturbances like this one. It should not take an attack like this one to promote a change in the way we treat or hinder racism. We need a change, and we need it now.

For those of you who are advocating for what happened, I would like to know why. Let me know and inform me on why you think it is acceptable, to not only publicly humiliate this teenager (who has done nothing wrong) but to also verbally and physically abuse him to the point where he is scarred with the actions of the suspects.

The four suspects, Hill, Cooper, Covington, T., and Covington, B., have all been charged with a hate crime, felony aggravated kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
