"Sailor Moon," for all intents and purposes, is a show that has been pretty much defined by the people who carry its legacy. Such people range from creator Naoko Takeuchi to the fanbase that has been large enough to not only warrant a redubbing of the original series, but also a reboot in the form of "Sailor Moon Crystal." And while most of the characters are relatively straightforward, the circumstances they are thrown are certainly not, with plenty of symbolism to boot.
The best point of comparison would probably be, strangely enough, the Eagles in general and their most well-known song "Hotel California" in particular. There have been so much discussion over what some consider to be one of the greatest classic rock songs ever. Technically, the band came out and said it was about the whole rock lifestyle of the time to varying degrees, from Satanism to something akin to "The Twilight Zone." But then again, the imagery in the song is so vivid and complex that it is hard to not have different interpretations if you listen carefully enough.
So, in that spirit, here is an outline for an AMV (anime music video) using the romantic scenes from "Sailor Moon" (you know which ones I am talking about, don't play dumb) set to "Hotel California." Here's the song for good measure, as performed at the group's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:
(Spanish guitar riff)
Quick shots cutting between our two lovers, Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Kamen, both in their fighting outfits and in their respective civilian forms as Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba.
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
It transitions into a clip from the pilot, where the two meet each other for the first time.
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Sailor Moon stares and blushes, Tuxedo Kamen throws a rose, and then departs in a flourish (not exactly chronological, but still good imagery).
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
A quick shot of the Tokyo skyline at night, preferably from the most dreamlike episode possible.
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for the night
Mamoru standing alone in casual wear at his place, staring off into the distance thoughtfully.
There she stood in the doorway, I heard the mission bell
This is a clip of Usagi's dream in episode 3. As one writer for The Mary Sue described it, "Usagi’s all flying around some pretty clouds until she finds Tuxedo Mask, who is… brooding? Chillin’? Just like… hanging out."
And I was thinking to myself, "This could be Heaven or this could be Hell."
He turns around, they exchange a few words (the subtitles should be cut), and she has a massive happy face.
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
Mamoru and Usagi are in the Starlight Tower, as the former explains his personal backstory.
There were voices down the corridor
It seamlessly transitions into the dream about Princess Serenity asking him to find the Legendary Silver Crystal.
I thought I heard them say
Then it cuts back to Mamoru, having finished his backstory as he knew it then.
"Welcome to the Hotel California!"
"Such a lovely place, such a lovely face."
"Plenty of room at the Hotel California."
"Any time of year, you can find it here."
Throughout the chorus, there are cuts between clips of Mamoru's past childhood memories, which culminates in him accepting Sailor Moon's locket and returning back to the side of good.
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Bends*
Then, it slowly transitions to the establishing shot of the Moon Kingdom during the Silver Millennium. On a balcony, we see the old Princess Serenity staring up at the Earth.
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends
She then looks down below to see her beloved, the Prince Endymion.
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat
It cuts to a scene of a ball, where both Serenity and Endymion are dancing together.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
They continue to dance together. They look so happy together, and unaware of their impending deaths.
So I called up the Captain, "Please bring me my wine."
It cuts to the present day, where Usagi asks Luna a personal question (again, no subtitles).
He said, "We haven't had that spirit here since 1969."
Luna replies back in a way that Usagi accepts, back is otherwise not particularly happy with.
And still those voices are calling from far away
It cuts to her bidding farewell to her “ordinary life” and looks sadly up at the moon.
Wake you up in the middle of the night, just to hear them say
Where it transitions to the releasing of the souls shown in the pilot episode's cold opening.
"Welcome to the Hotel California!" (guitar riff)
"Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place), such a lovely face."
"They living it up at the Hotel California." (guitar riff)
"What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise), bring your alibis."
Throughout the chorus, we see flashes of both the Moonlight Knight and a thoroughly confused Mamoru. This culminates in her cradling him at the base of the Makai Tree, and the spirit of the Moonlight Knight returning to Mamoru's body.
Mirrors on the ceiling, the pink champagne on ice
Cut to a scene of the two of them together, with him carrying Chibiusa on his back.
And she said: "We are all just prisoners here of our own device."
Then it cuts to a framed picture of the two of them, completely happy together without a care in the world.
And in the master's chambers, they gathered for the feast
It transitions to the scene of Mamoru and Usagi celebrating their wedding, as they walk towards the church.
They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast
Then, just as they are about to kiss, a sudden explosion occurs and they are separated.
Last thing I remember, I was running for the door
We cut to Mamoru jumping out of his bed, obviously shaken by the dream and its possible implications.
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Then it cuts to him riding a motorcycle with that redheaded chick whose name is escaping me right now, but I'm not gonna cheat by Googling it.
"Relax," said the night man, "We are programmed to receive."
It transitions to a projection of the future King Endymion, who sent the dreams in the first place.
"You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave!"
And then it goes back to the scene before that, where he rides off while she breaks down crying.
[Guitar Solo]
It transitions to live-action, where we a man facing the camera in a similar position, except holding a drink in his hand. He monologues to the camera about the fleeting nature of love and how depictions of it fail to acknowledge the cold and bitter reality to its fullest extent. And as the song plays out, it cuts back to the scene of Usagi and Mamoru reconciling and sharing a kiss; the video ends with the man quietly grumbling, "Of course, because of the genuine sweetness of the relationship from here on out, I can't be compelled to care in the slightest..."
*That's not a typo, it was in the original lyrics.
