The nominations for the 2019 Academy Awards are officially posted, and as I was scrolling through the list of nominees, I found myself frequently scoffing at the snubs and surprising picks for the ballot. I was pretty happy with The Academy's selections last year, but I'm just appalled at a lot of the films that were left off of the ballot. We'll start with Best Picture, and talk about the major categories, as well as some categories that are dear to my heart.
(Also, as a note, a full ballot prediction and picks article will come a week before the awards are presented!)
Best Picture: Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Vice, A Star Is Born, Roma, BlacKkKlansman, Green Book, Black Panther
Okay, I know that "First Man" has lost some steam heading into the awards season, but come on, is it really not as good as "Vice?" I didn't think Vice was downright terrible, but it's a strongly politically motivated film that lacks in structure and writing. "First Man" however is a complete film in score, cinematography, writing, and acting. I just don't get it.
Not only that but "If Beale Street Could Talk" being left out is also a travesty. Like I said in my previous article, Bohemian Rhapsody benefited from winning the Golden Globe, and while I think Boho is a good film, leaving out the Barry Jenkins masterpiece is awful.
A Star Is Born has to be the leader in the clubhouse for this category.
Best Actor: Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe, Rami Malek, Viggo Mortenson
I'm gonna complain a lot of about lack of representation for First Man, so this is me doing it again. Ryan Gosling got snubbed in 2017 after not winning Best Actor and is now getting snubbed by not even getting in for his performance as Neil Armstrong. It's a travesty. Some people would argue that Timothee Chalamet deserved to be in for his performance in "Beautiful Boy," but the Academy really does love them some Willem Dafoe. Ethan Hawke being left out for his beautiful "First Reformed" performance also sucks.
Christian Bale is the presumed leader in this category, though I don't agree with it.
Best Actress: Yalitza Aparicio, Glenn Close, Olivia Colman, Lady Gaga, Melissa McCarthy
I don't really have any complaints about this category. It's pretty crowded with awesome performances across the board, but any tie or indecision should immediately go towards Lady Gaga winning.
Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali, Adam Driver, Sam Rockwell, Sam Elliot, Richard E. Grant
Excuse me, but how in the world did Sam Elliot get nominated for this one? I like Sam Elliot, but he is BARELY in the film!!! Anyways this is also a crowded one. My pick probably will not win, and it would be Sam Rockwell for his portrayal of George W. Bush. However, I feel the most likely winners of this category are Mahershala Ali and Adam Driver.
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, Marina de Tavira, Regina King, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz
Still, no complaints with this category, as most of the complaints come within the major categories. Still, the winner here is anybody's guess, but the two frontrunners have to be Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.
Best Original Screenplay: The Favourite, First Reformed, Green Book, Roma, Vice
How Vice got nominated for this award is beyond me, but I'm insanely happy about the inclusion of First Reformed, the most underrated movie of the year. However, I see The Favourite as the clear "favorite" (ha... ha...).
Best Original Score: Isle of Dogs, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Mary Poppins Returns, If Beale Street Could Talk
HOW. DID. FIRST. MAN. NOT. GET. NOMINATED? I really don't understand. I don't understand.
Best Documentary Feature: Won't You Be My Neighbor Didn't Get Nominated
I didn't even feel like mentioning the other nominees, but the fact that the documentary on Mr. Rogers didn't get nominated is an absolute travesty. It's a joke and the biggest snub of this awards season. I am personally disappointed in the Academy for not giving this beautiful documentary it's proper recognition. The Academy has some apologizing to do for this one.
