From Sandy Hook to Aurora and Charleston to San Bernardino, massive shootings in the last few years have become the deadliest in U.S. history. The United States suffered the worst mass shooting in modern history when 50 people were killed and 53 injured at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.
A gunman stormed into the packed gay nightclub and opened fire. The gunman, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, was killed by a SWAT team after taking hostages. During the siege, Mateen called 911, pledged his allegiance to Islamic State and mentioned the Boston Bombing in 2013.
Mateen was a terrorist who was able to legally purchase a handgun and a .223 AR-15-style assault rifle days before the attack. Mateen was investigated twice by the FBI on suspicion of having terrorist ties in 2013 and 2014, yet they could not find conclusive evidence.
How can someone who has been investigated by the FBI and appeared on the terrorist watch list be able to obtain a weapon?
At this point, I'm sick and tired of the government not making gun control laws that could decrease the number of mass shootings in the United States. I don't think banning firearms is the answer, however there needs to be stricter laws as to how and who obtains firearms. It doesn't make sense for someone who could potentially be a terrorist unable to travel by plane, but able to purchase a gun.
As an American, I feel like money has become more important than my life. Corporations are making millions of dollars selling guns, and with gun control laws, less people are going to be able to purchase them. That means less money for the National Rifle Association (NRA) who continues to lobby against gun control. It's time for people's protection to be less important than money and corruption.
