If you live in Oregon, you're lucky enough to be blessed with 98,466 square miles of natural playground to explore on.
Since summer is right around the corner, here are some of Oregon’s best adventures that can be done in a day.
1. Opal Creek
Only a short drive from Salem, this hike takes you through a forest of 500-year-old trees that were once endangered by logging until a Wilderness bill protected the Opal Creek area in 1998. The hike is an easy one – the trail itself is more of a gravel road. The eight-mile loop takes you through Jawbone Flats, an old mining camp, and eventually to the clear, blue waters of Opal Creek.
2. Oneonta Gorge
This Oregon gem is unique because, unlike most hikes, the trail is actually not a trail at all. To get into the gorge, you must walk up through the creek. The hike itself is only one mile but because of the creek trail, the hike difficulty is classified as difficult due to climbing over logs and wading in water. This spot is quite busy on weekends, so if you’re looking for quiet, it is best to go on a weekday. The chilly water makes it a perfect hike for a hot summer’s day!
3. Silver Creek Falls
Located right outside of Salem, this 8.7-mile hike is perfect for people of all ages. Silver Falls State Park is the largest in Oregon and is one of Oregon’s main attractions. The hike consists of ten waterfalls, all uniquely beautiful in their own way. The hike difficulty is classified as moderate and makes for a great day trip.
4. Umpqua Hot Springs
Just a short 0.3 mile will lead you to one of Oregon’s most notorious hot springs located along the Umpqua River. The springs are situated on a rock face 150 feet above the North Umpqua and the temperature of the water is at a comfortable 108 degrees. The springs have an awesome view of Surprise Falls right across the river and clothing is optional, so don’t be surprised if you encounter some nudity!
5. Blue Pool
The Tamolitch Pool, better known as the Blue Pool, is situated in the McKenzie River Valley and is only a 4-mile out and back trail to reach it. The McKenzie River National Recreation Trail is 26 miles with great points all along it, such as Sahalie and Koosah Falls. Blue Pool got its name from its deep turquoise color that mesmerizes all who visit it. The pool is where the McKenzie River comes to the surface through underground lava fields that used to flow over that land. The clean and cool water is refreshing to swim in and is unlike anything you will ever see; an Oregon treasure for sure!
If you’re really looking for a challenge, South Sister Summit is a fun and challenging day hike guaranteed to provide adventure. 28.5 miles west of Salem, the mountain is 10,358 feet high – the third tallest in Oregon – and provides breathtaking views of the central Oregon area. The hike is classified as extremely difficult – it is steep, long and rugged. However, the hike does not require any technical climbing skills, so adventurers with grit and determination can reap the beautiful rewards from on top of South Sister.
