For many, it's easy to shut down the idea of love. It's effortless for some to not want to open up or share their heart with another. There are people who are legitimately scared to let love into their life. Recently, it seems as if it's become somewhat of a trend to not care and to be “heartless.” People are taking pride (or faux pride) and being so called “cold-hearted.” Most often, those people have probably just been hurt in the past, so their defense mechanism is to pretend to not care at all. It's a wall that some put up because they don't want to get hurt like they did in the past. It's to put up a front if your heart has been wounded. What's important to realize is that not everyone is out to get you. Love isn't always detrimental. The next person to come into your life romantically doesn't necessarily want to break your heart or leave you in pieces.
You cannot project the pain of someone in the past onto the next person who may never cause you any pain at all. Love shouldn't permanently be blocked out due to a constant fear of being hurt. Blocking romance out for an extensive amount of time isn't healthy. If anything, it could ultimately become more detrimental to you as a person. Letting love in can be more beneficial and healing than one may think. Sure, you may not need someone to make you happy, but it does feel damn good to have someone around. Sharing feelings, thoughts, ideas, and memories with another being feels a whole lot better than being forever bitter and spiteful. Being open to love doesn't have to mean that you're a vulnerable person. It doesn't make you a weak person, either. You can still be an independent person and capable of loving you while putting love into another individual. Loving someone doesn't mean you still can't love yourself. You can love yourself to the grave, but that's not the point. There's so much that can come from letting someone in. It's truly therapeutic. You can't really know what it's like to open up if you don't allow yourself to do so. When the possibility of being in love becomes more than a possibility, the list of things that you can gain is quite lengthy. Memories are made, adventures become beautiful experiences, and there's always a shoulder to lean on when you're feeling down. Sharing your life with another person can heal old wounds, blossom happiness from within, and give you a new perspective. You never know, it's possible that the next lover who appears in your world could provide you with many different insights and perspectives that become pivotal in your life. Maybe your next lover is going to be your future spouse, and maybe they aren't. The point being, whether a relationship is short or long term, people that come into your life are either a lesson or a blessing.
Projecting a jaded persona to avoid heartbreak isn't going to get you very far. Love should be given a chance. It's an extraordinary sensation. It's very powerful; there's no feeling quite like it. Everyone should experience it without the fear of whether it will last or not. Live in the present, right now where you are, and risk it. Be open-minded about the circumstances. Test the waters or submerge yourself deep within, but at the very least take a dip. There's more to life than being alone, or feeling as if you should be alone. Everyone deserves to know what having a special someone is like. It's truly a phenomenal feeling, looking at your companion, your best friend, and knowing they feel the same way about you as you feel about them. It's electric, being in love: it alters your aura, and gives you an incentive to move forward. If you shut down each opportunity when romance is presented to you, how will you ever know what it's like?
Love is different with every person. Your next significant other more than likely won't be the same as your last. The beauty of it all is the uniqueness of each individual. Whether you're opening your heart for the first time or sharing it again after being healed, you're going to gain an experience that will teach you something. Let that defensive wall down, and you may be very surprised what you find. Take the chance rather than regret a missed opportunity. You may be enlightened.
