To my favorite POTUS,

This upcoming election will be my first time voting in a presidential election and I find myself disappointed. At this point, I’m embarrassed by the candidates that are likely to be named the nominees at the end of the primary season (I’ll be pleasantly surprised if Bernie wins the nomination and be only half as embarrassed as I was before). As I was thinking about what I was going to do if Hilary wins the nomination I started wishing that my first time voting in a presidential election had been during your first or second term. If I could go back in time at the age I am now I would’ve voted for you a hundred times over, even as a 7th grader I recognized the start of your presidency as not only a milestone in the black community but also as a new start for the United States.

Within the 8 years of your presidency you’ve been working hard to improve the status of our country and the people who live within it. Since you’ve taken office in 2009, the economy of our nation has improved tremendously and the unemployment rate has dropped from 10% to 5%. In addition to helping drop the unemployment rate you’ve also done your part in reducing the percent of Americans without health insurance. At the start of 2013, roughly 18% of Americans were uninsured, and that number has dropped to about 11% at the end of 2015. Let me throw out just a few other accomplishments; gay marriage, climate change, Cuba, education… need I say more?

But there’s more to your success than just political accomplishments, you have also helped set a new standard inside the black community. A black man as president, if you hadn’t done it I’m not sure who would’ve (I mean let’s be honest, Ben Carson didn’t have the pizazz). You carry yourself in a way that demands respect and you are quick to return it once it has been earned and have set a great example for not only little black boys, but children everywhere, and for that I thank you.

To my favorite FLOTUS,

If I had to describe you in a word it would be perfection. From your perfectly laid hair (down past your drool-worthy arms) to your impeccable shoe choice, you are perfection. But not just in the fashion sense, you also inspire young women everywhere with your drive and determination to get things done. You have become a positive role model not only through your actions but through the messages you send. As an advocate for veterans and their families you help teach young Americans that we need to support each other in our times of need, through your Let’s Move initiative you’ve addressed childhood obesity and stressed the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

More recently, you’ve been inspiring students of all walks of life to pursue education past their high school degree, whether it be a professional degree or furthering their education at a 4 year college, and just this past year you’ve been pushing countries around the world to support their young women in their academic endeavors and pushing them to become more than just housewives. In addition to spreading positive messages, you teach young women that they can be great without a man. Yes, you happen to be married to the POTUS but your resume is impressive on its own, you are one of the 3 first ladies in history to have a postgraduate degree (the other two being Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush). On a personal note, I too am pursuing a BA in sociology and seeing as that’s what you started with I think that I’m on the right track.

Even though you are both on your way out of office even in your retirement you both will continue to inspire young men and women across the nation, and you’ll always be my favorite first couple (oh, and I can’t wait to see your movie)!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
