An Open Letter To My Little Sister

To my best friend,

Since you were born my life has changed. The first few years of my life were kind of lonely. Mom and Dad were great, but I felt like something was missing. OK maybe a two-year-old doesn't know that someone as important as you was missing in her life, but I sure do know now that life without you is a life not worth living.

At the age of three, I got to hold you in my tiny arms. Since then, you have surpassed my height and I'm so proud of the woman you have become. I got to watch you grow up and you have no idea how much I loved that. You were always by my side and I got to help you every step of the way. Whether I was helping you write your name or teaching you how to put on eye shadow, I have loved every minute of being your big sister.

Mom always told me that you wanted to be just like me. What she doesn't know is how much I wanted to be like you. You were always so patient with me. Every day I forced you to play school and you were and always will be the best student I ever had. If it weren't for you, I might not have decided to become a teacher. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't be the person I am today and I'm eternally grateful. You are so strong, courageous, and confident. I can't wait to watch you conquer the world.

I want to end this letter with a thank you. Thank you for letting mom hold me, even though you were the baby and I loved the attention. Thank you for sitting in the sand on the beach with me and making sand castles with me. Thank you for making me laugh so hard that my stomach hurts. Thank you for standing by my side whenever we got in trouble or throwing me under the bus because you could. Thank you for dealing with my tantrums and for being the calm to my storm. Thank you for all of the car rides where we just blast music or talk for hours. Thank you for being my rock and getting me through a lot of hard times. Thank you for taking care of mom and our dog Maggie when I'm away at school. Thank you for making a mess in the bathroom and your bedroom, because you wouldn't be you if you didn't make messes for me to clean up. Thank you for taking care of me when I should really be the one taking care of you. Thank you for always understanding me and being my best friend. Thank you for loving me endlessly (like you have a choice) and being the most incredible little sister a girl could ask for.
