An Open Letter To Tri-Sigma

I was skeptical about the concept of Greek life when I came to college almost two years ago. My older sister was in a sorority and she always talked about her sisters, the sorority house, etc. During high school, I frequently told my parents that I would never join a sorority because I did not think that I was one of those girls. Boy, was I wrong.

I made my first college friend at orientation that year and we became joined at the hip. When she mentioned going out for recruitment, I was definitely hesitant, but I figured that if I didn't like what I saw, I would just not join. Recruitment week was the longest and most stressful week of my life. There were events every single night and endless crafts. (I am terrible at crafting, so you can imagine how I felt about it.)

One sorority really stuck out to me: Sigma Sigma Sigma. I'm not sure if it was because of the fact that Carrie Underwood is a Tri-Sigma or the fact that I could never forget the name because it's the same letter three times. Maybe it was the girls who loved food just as much as I did or the fact that a few of them could burp on command. It stuck out to me as home, it was where I felt comfortable, and I could actually see myself there in a few weeks.

So I accepted my bid to Tri-Sigma, gaining a plethora of new sisters and a safe haven. I always had someone to study with, to eat food with, or to exercise with and it felt fantastic. I had a group of people to go with to fraternity parties because I was too scared to go to by myself. I felt as if my world was now right and that college would be a breeze. Unfortunately, college isn't totally a breeze, but having my 40-some sisters behind me always helps.

Tri-Sigma has brought me to some of my closest friends, some not even from my organization but from other Greeks. Whether it is my big, my little, my best guy friends from Theta Chi, or any of my fabulous sisters, I always have someone to lean on.

Being in a Greek organization definitely will break the stereotypes of sororities that you get from movies or from bad examples on the news. It is not buying your friends and we do not do the whole topless pillow fight thing. Our number one concern is our sisterhood as a whole and becoming closer throughout the years. We volunteer together and strive for Greek unity before we consider going out. We make ourselves better women and work to empower women not just in our organization, but across campus.

Tri-Sigma has brought me nothing but opportunities to help me succeed. Most importantly, it has brought me my home while I'm away from home.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
