An Open Letter To My Freshman Year Dorm Room

Dear Freshman Year Dorm Room,

This is the place with new beginnings and new friendships. This room is filled with memories of whispers, yelling, laughter, tears and so much more. Your door looks like all of the others, but on the inside is a room that is special only to us. I met my roommate/best friend/future bridesmaid in this room. We learned everything about each other in this room and we told each other things that we would never tell anyone else. We've opened your door and allowed others to freely come in and enjoy our place with us. The bonds that we have made in this room will be forever remembered. So here is a little thank you for being a place to allow us to grow.

This room may be small and compact, but thank you for allowing us to be as creative as we can in a limited amount of space. It has forced us to think outside of the box when it comes to fitting all of our stuff, and it has forced us as roommates to be very very close (at all times). This room may be small, but its felt like a safe zone. When I need to escape life I know that I can come here and be completely alone. This is our space and we can do what makes us happiest with it. So thank you for being a place that I have been able to create a new home in.

Whenever I walk in this room, I know it's ours because of its scent, because of the way the carpet feels on my feet, and the way that (even while it looks just like everyone else's) it has a uniqueness that is only ours. We can look out the window over the school and know that this is our home. This is the place where we will grow into the people that we may be for the rest of our lives.

Thank you for being a place where I can fully be myself. Where we can tell each other secrets, and laugh until late at night when we should be sleeping for our classes the next day. Thank you for being a place where we can be emotional and cry when life gets a little too hard. Typically being in a small box made of cinder blocks would not be comforting, but this place feels different than all the other rooms. It's special, because this is where our memories were made.

So, to the freshmen who have this room next year - make it as unique as you can. Make it a place that you can call home and where you can grow. Also, the door squeaks a little (lot) and the blinds will break if you let them fall too hard, but it's all part of the memories. Make them worth it.

Sincerely,

The girls who made this room unique

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
