Music is Much More Than What's on the Radio

We need to end the divide in music

I am a person who would not be able to survive a single day without music. Music speaks to me in a way that people won't ever. When I listen to music, the music needs to have meaning for me. I cannot tolerate this new candy pop garbage that's popular nowadays. It's just that this music has no substance. I asked many of my friends who listen to it and asked them why they like it. Most of the answers I got from them were "it's just a vibe" or "its cool to listen to them when you're chilling." Maybe I'm an old soul or just an aesthete, but I love classic music. Now when I say classic music, I'm talking about Van Halen, Jethro Tull, Big Daddy Kane, Barrington Levy. I love seeing how much music evolved and I am a fan of the Golden for each genre. From Marvin Gaye and David Bowie to The Beastie Boys and KRS-One, their music is about meaning! They were/are making music to convey a message to their fans. I genuinely hate when people claim to love music, but are so closed minded when it comes to giving the classics an ear. Sometimes I believe that life needs a throwback song from the 80's that will be appropriate in real life situations. We all have those go-to songs that we think of when we are in the situation it fits perfectly for. Like hearing Shaggy's famous line "it wasn't me" when you got accused of something, big or small. I know people that like the newer stuff might argue that the new artists are the best out and nobody can match the style of artists now. I don't want to be the person that tries to force his beliefs onto others, but when it comes to a situation like this, I would like to argue and say that they must hear all of the unparalleled talent that came before these artists as to get the whole picture and appreciate the beauty of the art. You have one side of the music fans that are saying that nothing will beat the golden era/classics and then you have the other side saying that the new era of music has changed and must be appreciated over the old stuff.

No matter your perspective, I believe that we must accept and love all genres and versions of music as you can see that it's benefits are positive in the long run. Mac Miller sampled the a small sound bite from the cult classic KIDS. He edited the quote as to create another quote that I and many others can agree with: "When you're young, not much matters. When you find something that you care about, then that's all you got. When you go to sleep at night you dream of music. When you wake up it's the same thing. It's there in your face. You can't escape it. Sometimes when you're young the only place to go is inside. That's just it - music is what I love. Take that away from me and I really got nothing."

So next time someone suggests a song to you that isn't from the last 10 or 15 years, actually give it a list. I promise music does not get worse the further back you listen.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
