Dear Mr. Durant,
To start, sorry about the loss. I know it hasn’t been very long and it’s probably too early to be pushing you out of the home you’ve made in OKC, but it’s kind of urgent for the state of other franchises and I can’t let Isaiah Thomas draw first. So here goes nothing. Kevin, Atlanta needs you.
You would be a perfect fit for the Hawks and would be the deliverance Atlanta needs to pull us out of the Clevelands and Chicagos of terrible sports cities. The Hawks are a surprisingly good team, and the best of my lifetime, but we will never get past LeBron without a superstar, and you could be the one.
To think we’ve made it this far the past two seasons, in an NBA where teams need multiple superstars to be successful, without any superstars. Just imagine if we had a superstar to surround with the current cast. The Hawks desperately need someone who can take over a game, and who can be the go-to-guy for a final shot, and that exactly fits you. We have a team that dearly needs to be lead, and you are that leader. This is plainly visible to anyone watching basketball, but there is something you probably haven’t realized. Kevin, you need Atlanta.
Coming to the Hawks would be a perfect move for you, as well. Pretty soon, people like Skip Bayless will be roasting you on "First Take" for not leading your team and finishing the series. And while opinions like his don’t matter, you have been lucky for not receiving more criticism already. One writer said it kind of like this: “Kevin Durant has it made. When Oklahoma City wins, Durant gets the credit, and if they lose we blame Westbrook.”
Pretty soon, I feel the blame will shift to you. I mean, you are one of the top three players in the league. Coming to Atlanta would be perfect. Everyone would understand if you left, as LeBron left in a very similar way after his team blew a 3-1 lead in the conference finals. But coming to Atlanta would be an anti-LeBron move, as you would appear to be going to a worse team. This would be great, as many judge James for taking the easy way out and going to Miami, but leaving Westbrook would make coming to the Hawks seem like you wanted to win one without a “big three” -- something LeBron cannot seem to do.
It would be great PR for you to come here, but you would have a good chance of winning a title also. All you would have to do is beat the Cavaliers, and you would be in the Finals. Also, no player currently on the Hawks seems to want to be the takeover guy, and would gladly allow you to take all the shots you wanted. And if you did end up taking Atlanta on a championship journey, you would be a hero forever, yet probably wouldn’t be judged if you didn’t. The fact is, the Atlanta media would be too busy criticizing the regional football teams to attempt to criticize you, but would get the entire city excited when you helped the team do well.
The important things here are the legacy of Kevin Durant, and the legacy of the Atlanta Hawks. You both are in a similar place. Neither have won a championship and without major changes, neither of you will. You and the Hawks are both underachieving. But these can all be fixed for both sides, and all it takes is your name on one of those sweet looking red, grey and volt jerseys.
Hope to see you soon,
Every Hawks fan.
