Gossip Girl once said "In our modern age, when you call someone and can’t find them you can be pretty sure they’ll get the message. But if they don’t call you back, it usually means they don’t want to be found."
The loophole on this?
The kind of message we are talking about. Let's be honest and admit that no one has made a phone call since the early 2000's. How do we survive then? Text messages. I remember how it was when my aunts started texting on their Nokias. I am pretty sure you had read this before, but texting wasn't always easy. You had to work for it, and you had to want it. You wanted a capital S? You had to click that seven button four times. Something that became conveniently quick is now our tool to avoid any human contact.
You would think by now that everyone has gotten the "Don't call me unless you are dying" memorandum. Texting has in fact become universal. However, every now and then, you are going to find someone that doesn't live by these new rules. You can text them and get a response five hours later; you may not even get a response at all. Just to have these people say, "I am sorry. I am a bad texter."
What is a bad texter? According to the Urban Dictionary, a bad texter is someone who has no conception of communication. Bad texters usually have symptoms like: one word responses, horrible grammar, delayed responses with no excuse and, my favorite, not participating. That is if they reply to you at all.
What happens when one of the parties does not text back? A lot of mental breakdowns. They don't end in tears though. They do however cause scenarios in our heads that drive us crazy. When that special someone doesn't text back, we wonder whether they are dead or not. Sure, it is a mean thing to think about, but if you are going to take all day to answer back, then you better be six feet underground.
Another thing that happens is the development of conspiracy theories. They usually go from "maybe they are busy" to "I know you have your phone with you everywhere you go!" After you plan on how you are going to get back at them, you take a few steps back and think you are a monster who did something stupid, and doesn't know how to fix it. After forgetting that we have sent the text message in the first place, we just come to the happy conclusion that the person not texting back is simply a jerk of enormous proportions.
