I will start off with this piece is completely bias. I have stayed up until midnight to buy all of Taylor Swift's albums. I have traveled to four different states to see all four of her tours. I spent endless hours trying to, and succeeding in getting Taylor Swift to follow me on Tumblr. I don't see any wrong in her, but I know a lot of people do.
I've heard arguments that she is the face for white feminism. Urban Dictionary defines white feminism as, "A brand of feminism centered around the ideals and struggles of primarily white women. While not outright exclusive, its failure to consider other women and its preoccupation with Western standards and the problems faced by the 'average woman' is often alienating to women of color, non-straight women, trans women, and women belonging to religious or cultural minorities." She speaks of alliances and solidarity between women and has spoken out for the empowerment of women. While she obviously holds a privilege—many privileges—in our society, I think it's important that females in such high power, like she is, to speak out on feminism and women's rights without exclusion of anyone. She is a role model for millions of young girls who are diverse in many different aspects. I think she checks and acknowledges her privilege and won't purposely try to exclude or offend a group of people. Her advocacy for support of women is not an exclusive club.
I've heard arguments that she has no talent. I'm sorry, but that's just wrong. She is a multi-Grammy winner, multi-platinum recording artist and has broken endless amount of records. You may not like her music, but you are not allowed to take away her talent. Her tours let you step out of reality for a few hours into a fairytale of love in all its forms. She has a crazy amount of No. 1 hits, and if you've ever had a Taylor Swift song stuck in your head than you are a liar.
The funniest I've heard is that she is too nice. While it's a rare sight to see a star in Hollywood without any crazy outbursts, drunken fights or caught on camera inappropriate moments, the public tends not to believe when there actually is a famous person who is somewhat decent. While she has had conflicts with Nicki Minaj and Kanye West and has taken Apple head on to take away a policy she thought (and actually was) unfair, she has kept her name clean and has been a solid role model for anyone to look up too.
You don't have to like Taylor Swift, even though I have tried to convince all my friends that they should, but it's not right to make false accusations or take away someone's credentials just because you can't get her music out of your head and shake it off.
