Dear Bernie Sanders Supporters,
I would like to open first by saying that I like both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. I haven’t even decided who I will be voting for yet, so don’t think that I am in any way specifically supporting or opposing either candidate. I am just trying to think realistically about the way things are looking as of now and what will need to be done to secure a Democratic Presidency.
As of right now, it is looking like more and more probable nominees will be Donald Trump for the Republican Party and Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party. This is what many political scientists are saying and what seems to be apparent throughout the media as of now. It is still too early to make a definite call, but this is how it is looking and Super Tuesday next week will help to make things clearer. Also keep in mind that Hillary has a huge advantage with Superdelegates over Bernie which only increases her chances of being the party’s nominee.
With that being said, let’s just say for now, hypothetically, that Hillary is the nominee for the Democratic Party. I know a lot of Bernie supporters are in favor of him for very specific reasons, some being views that differ from Hillary. I also know that a lot of Bernie supporters don’t like Hillary Clinton. You don’t feel the same connection and may not feel that she is really a candidate that is for you and for the things that matter to you. Despite these views, she is by far one of, if not, the most qualified people to ever run for president.
Ultimately I am worried if we end up with a Trump vs. Clinton general election. I am worried that a lot of Democrats that supported Bernie will not turn out and vote for Hillary. This worries me because it would only increase the chance of a Trump or simply a Republican Presidency, and I know you don’t want that.
What I would urge democrats in favor of Bernie to do if he doesn’t end up becoming the Democratic Party nominee would be to still go out to vote in November in support of your party. You may be disappointed that your candidate did not win and you may disagree with some of Hillary’s positions, but that isn’t a good enough reason to let your party fail by not turning out to the polls. I guarantee if you’re a democrat, that a Clinton presidency will be much better for you and honestly for us all than a Trump presidency.
Finally, I am not suggesting anyone give up on Bernie. Nothing is set in stone yet. If you want Bernie to be the Democratic candidate, be sure to get out there and vote because that is all that you really can do and all that will really matter in the end. I just urge you to keep an open mind moving forward through the primaries and into the general election so that no matter what we can have a Democratic President for at least four more years.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Democrat
