An Open Letter To The People Who Got Me Through The Year

Dear You,

Roommates, I honestly don’t even know where to begin, but I’ll start with this: How did I get so lucky? Seriously, though. I hear the horror stories about people getting to college and having their roommates turn out to be anywhere from destructive sleepwalkers, to obnoxious drunks, to potential serial killers, and it truly makes me so thankful to have you two. Although there have been a couple minor bumps in the road -- like me breaking the Brita -- I couldn’t imagine having spent this year of college with anyone else. Your insightful advice, entertaining drunk alter egos, endless first-world problems ("omg I have nothing to wear") and boat loads of life advice truly made our time in the dorms feel like home.

Friends, I never thought that I would be able to meet such incredible people so fast. There was a split second in my life when I thought that I wouldn’t be able to meet anyone who understands me, helps me and positively influences me, but that mindset took a full spin when I met you all. You are all so special to me and unique in your own ways, and at this point, I can’t even remember what I did before I had you. Your dynamic personalities bring out sides of me that I didn’t even know I possessed, and for that, I thank you. I can’t wait to see where life takes our squad, but I know that no matter where we are, we will manage to make a splash, because you are some of the craziest, most questionable and genuine people I know.

Professors, what a relationship (or lack thereof), we have. I know that it is hard to even put a face to a name in the lectures with hundreds of people, but that is why it is so special when you actually manage to do so. You really kicked my a** at some points this year, but you also pushed me to strive harder than I ever have before.

Sorority sistas, thanks for showing me the fun side of college, and pushing me to celebrate… everything. Some people say that people who join Greek Life are “buying their friends,” but you showed me that could not be further from the truth. All Greek Life does is put a bunch of people who like the same things, have the same interests, and believe in the same things, in one area together, and the rest is up to us. You really are my best friends, and you made a big school feel perfectly homey.

Parents, from the desperate phone calls begging for more spending money, to the depressing phone calls with me balling my eyes out about classes, you’re always there. I swear I never thought that college could possibly make us closer, but considering that I call each of you about four times per day (plus texts), I think its safe to say that it did. I know it sounds cheesy, but I really couldn’t have done any of this without your constant support and love.

BFF from back home, you are truly the OG. It doesn’t matter how many miles college put between us, because I know that our love and friendship stretches further. I look forward to our weekly phone calls to catch up on gossip and daily texts even if we don’t have anything at all to really talk about it. Visiting you and seeing you in your new collegiate world was such a pleasure, and it was so reassuring to see that even though I know I’ll always be your number one (duh), you are in very capable hands with your new friends.

You all made this year so incredible, and even though its coming to an end, I know the next three years will be equally as great, if not better, with all of you wonderful human beings.

Love,

Me

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
