Dear Squidward Tentacles,
When I was growing up, I resented you, and I am sorry about that. As a child, you were my least favorite character in "Spongebob Squarepants." I didn't like you because how you treated everyone in the show. You were very disinterested in your job and you only really enjoyed playing the clarinet, which you were kind of bad at.
I thought it was funny whenever something bad happened to you. I felt like because of your negative attitude, you deserved it. Half the time I thought, "why did they even make him a character?"
In my mind, you didn't fit into the show. You were too much of a downer.
Now, I realize who you represent. You are the 20-something year olds who graduated college or are still in college. Even though you have a degree, you are at a dead end job that pays minimum wage. Your co-workers are teenagers who haven't seen how unfair the job field is. You have a single passion, but even though you love it, everyone tells you that it won't get you anywhere in life, and that you can't make a career out of it.
Squilliam Fancyson represents your peer from high school who had rich parents and, because of their connections, got the job of not only his dreams, but also your dreams, right out of high school.
You don't really hate Spongebob, you resent him because he still has such a positive outlook. It is just hard for you to deal with someone so positive all the time because you know how hard life can be. I completely understand that now, but when I was a kid I thought it was unjustified. I have a few Spongebobs in my life, and I respect you for how long you have had to put up with his crap.
I am very sorry for every bad thing I ever thought about you, Squidward. As I child, I hated you and as an adult, I realize that I grew up to become like you.
I am a bit cynical, high schoolers bug me just a bit with their bright outlook on life. While I don't hate my current job or my co-workers, I have had a few that made me hate everything whenever I was there. I hope at some point you get the job of your dreams or find something that really makes you happy. Right now, I understand what you are going through, and I hope both you and I aren't stuck in those positions for the rest of our lives.
I really am sorry,
Sidney Freitag
