Dear Advisory Board Member,
As sorority women, we deal with advisory board members from the time we start our time as active members. From the New Member advisor to the Ritual advisor, we get to interact with these advisors and even more alumnae during our collegiate days.
Personally, I think we should appreciate these women way more than we do.
It's very easy to complain about the rules they make us follow. From the advisor that tells us to behave during bus loading, the advisor that makes us bounce in a circle around the chapter room during recruitment and even the advisors that attend Founder's Day brunches and glare at hands marked with X's from the night before.
But, there is so much that we do not know about our advisors that a simple conversation with them would make most collegiate women understand. I'd like to take a moment to thank you for being great sisters and for helping us through our collegiate days.
First, we need to appreciate everything you do for the chapter.
In addition to financially donating and supporting our chapters, they also put in more hours to the chapter's functionality than some active members do. Some advisors spend hours a week working with their VP or officer to help them do their job correctly. And this is all on top of their actual adult lives that include jobs, spouses and children.
Second, you probably did the "same" things we did in college, and actually reminisce about those days.
They have the same memories and tell the same stories we do. They like to gossip and drink on the weekends, who doesn't. And they still devote time to alumnae meetings and other meetings the same way we attend chapter meetings and have the same feelings about taking their time to do so.
Finally, we have to thank you for being our sisters.
It is obvious in having conversations with them that they were picked to be in their respective chapters the same way we were. We share values and a bond that can't be broken from ritual ceremonies. We are tied together and I'm sure we all act in similar ways, because let's face it. We are in a sorority and usually members are similar in attitude and personality. We all get along for a reason- and advisors are no different.
So, as the semester wraps up, think about all the times your advisors helped your chapter and try to thank them. Recruitment in the fall is ther perfect time to tell them how much you appreciate their dedication to your chapter, and your sorority letters.
Thank you Advisors, you work harder for our chapter than most active members, and it does not go without recognition.
