An Open Letter To Those Who Settle

Don't settle for anybody just so you can have somebody.

Attention all singles:

You might have just gotten out of a relationship or haven't had one in a while. You may be desperate or you may just be lonely, but no matter what you should never settle for anyone. You are a catch, a prize, a final destination. You are deserve more than what a mediocre relationship can give you. You are deserving of someone who puts you first, who cherishes you, who has the same values as you and succeeds every expectation you have for a partner.

Settling may seem like a safe thing to do – finding someone to be with just to have someone by your side can make you feel more secure. But, on the other hand holding out for the right person is a gamble. What if it never happens? What if it takes too long? What if there isn't someone out there who is perfect for me? Sure, there may be more of a risk when holding out for the right person, but the possible payoff is priceless and completely worth the wait.

Someone who you know isn't your ideal partner isn't worth the wasted time and effort. You may always put 110 percent toward the relationship to only get 75 percent back in return. And, while you are with someone who isn't everything you hope to have in a long-term partner you are wasting precious time that you could be with someone who is everything you ever wanted for yourself.

One major tip to avoid settling is to stop falling in love with the potential someone has. You cannot change anyone, nor should you want to. Find someone who you fall in love with just the way they are. By falling in love with potential, you are setting yourself up for arguments because your expectations are continually not met. You cannot fix someone. Everyone has their personal issues, their short-comings and their quirks, but you cannot change that. When looking for love, you have to realize you have to accept your partner for all that they are, good or bad.

Meanwhile when you are with someone you are settling for, you are only hurting yourself. You are lowering your personal self-worth for someone else. All of the problems that arise in a relationship that you know isn't the best thing for you just cause a vicious cycle that keeps you constantly bogged down in drama and unhappiness. It is so much better to be alone and happy than to be with someone and be miserable. You owe yourself more than to keep yourself in a relationship that isn't a good one.

So, take a step back. Whether it be a few days or a few years, regroup yourself before trying to find your other half. Learn to appreciate all that you have to offer and write down all the qualities that you want in a partner. Years down the road when you think you've found the one, look back on that list. If you've held true to your desires, you'll find that your partner holds most, if not all, of the qualities on your list. Hold true to yourself and happy hunting.

Sincerely,

The girl holding out for the right one

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
