An Open Letter To Trump Supporters, From A Liberal Snowflake

Our crybaby fears are more real than you think.

Donald Trump is now president, meaning that we will not only have a Republican commander-in-chief, but a Republican House and Senate. While this may be a victory to you, us liberals are not so excited. And no, our fears do not make us crybabies. They are very real fears that may affect you more than you realize.

The very first thing that our Republican House did this year was take steps towards repealing ObamaCare. Though the system has its flaws — large flaws — it fundamentally changed the way healthcare works. For women, we were able to have access to free birth control. My personal favorite argument was that, “if you can’t afford birth control, you shouldn’t be having sex.” Of course, it was mostly you conservative men making the argument, men who I can guarantee have very little knowledge about birth control. Birth control isn’t just a contraceptive despite its name. *gasps* It also helps to regulate menstrual cycles, ease the symptoms of endometriosis, help regulate hormones and lessen the severity of acne among other things. Also, biologically, young adults have a higher sex drive to prevent the human race from dying. Telling them to not have sex isn’t going to work, so we might as well give them birth control so that there are fewer abortions and less children born into poverty. Isn’t that your goal anyways?

Let’s look at education next. Oh, Betsy DeVos, you’ve got a big storm coming for you. Beyond saying teachers should carry guns to school to shoot grizzly bears (grizzly bears, really?), you're to be in charge of the entirety of the trillion-dollar student loan fund, and as a college student who relies on financial aid and the Pell Grant to be able to afford my college education, it scares me a lot that you admittedly have no experience when it comes to running as complex a system as this. And us liberals aren't the only people who need help with our college educations. I can guarantee that there are conservative students out there who rely on loans and grants to be able to fund our education. This isn’t just my education on the line, but my career. These days, if you don’t have a four-year degree, you don’t make much more than minimum wage. With the amount of competition out there, you can’t survive without a college education, and now you’re saying that people like me may not be able to get one, because we have an under-qualified woman handing out — or not handing out — money? That doesn’t scare you Republicans just a little bit?

DeVos isn’t the only one from Trump’s administration who is striking fears in our frail liberal hearts. Rick Perry, who promised to shut down the Energy Department in his own campaign four years ago, has changed his mind since he is now to run it. Perry, a ‘former’ climate denier, also didn’t realize that his role was to be in charge of America's nuclear arsenal. Nuclear weapons are a big deal, and if they end up in the wrong hands, could end in a nuclear disaster, basically spelling out death for all of us. Do these things not frighten you at all?

Beyond these two disasters you’ve put in office, the commerce pick, Wilbur Ross has sent 2,700 jobs offshore in the last decade and oversaw the coal disaster that trapped 13 miners underground for two days. Only one person survived. Scott Pruitt, EPA nominee, talked about baseball instead of the fact that he denies climate change. Climate change is a real — yes, real — issue for everyone. It’s not just ‘global warming,’ that’s why we don’t refer to it as that anymore, it is extreme weather on both sides of the spectrum. These severe winter storms that you are facing are because we don’t care about our environment enough, and now you’re putting climate deniers in charge of the programs that are supposed to help save us?

It’s not just Trump’s bigotry and sexism that scares us anymore. It’s the fact that you have put not only us liberals, but yourselves in a dangerous position. Our education, health and wellbeing are just a few of the things that are at risk under the Trump administration. And if worrying about these things makes me a sensitive snowflake then I’m proud to be one. I hope that you all realize your mistakes before its too late.

Sincerely,

Liberal snowflakes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
