Hi,

I don’t understand you.

I love reading. I love listening to music. I don’t love doing them at the same time. It doesn’t make sense to me. How can you possibly pay attention to what you’re reading when there are so many things happening at the same time? How can you possibly appreciate written words when you’re simultaneously listening to sung words?

Personally, the only time I wear my headphones while reading is to block out external noise, but I never put music on. It helps me focus when there’s too much ambient noise. When reading in public, it’s an excellent way to block out blaring music or loud people. Or perhaps most importantly, it’s a way to avoid conversation. (You don’t need to explain the book you’re reading if you have an excuse to totally ignore someone’s question!)

I always regret finishing a book and forgetting the particulars. When I read, I always try to remember as much as I possibly can. I want to fully immerse myself into my book without external distractions because I fear that they will prevent me from remembering and understanding the text.

Sure, there are people who listen to music without words when reading. I understand there’s something calming about classical music. I’m sure that this type of music helps soothe people and it might even help them focus on their reading.

But to people who listen to music and read -- you are bold. How can you handle it? How can you process reading and listening at the same time? Do you have an amazing attention that lets you simultaneously enjoy both of these things? Do you think that reading and listening to music helps you understand your book or music better?

Is your music selection in any way thematic? Like do you listen to the Beatles when you read “The Girls,” a novel set in California during the 1960s? Do you listen to Dominican music when you read novels by Junot Díaz? Or is there no method to your listening? Do you listen to Drake when you read Dickens, Orwell and Austen? Do your listening patterns change when you read fiction and non-fiction?

I want to finish this letter by saying that I admire your attention span. I know that I can’t read and listen to music at the same time. It isn’t in me.

Power on, readers, whatever your methods may be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
