Dear New People at the Gym,
I'm glad you are entering the world of "gym life." It's a life I know very well and I take it very seriously. Don't let the massive football players or lifting junkies scare you away.
Walking in to the gym for the first time can be terrifying. You ask yourself a million different questions, like, "Should I start with cardio? How do I even work a treadmill? How many people would notice if I wasn't able to lift even the bar?" But, you smell the protein powder in the air, and hear the satisfying sound of metal on metal as people rack their weights. You get chills as you think of the progress you are going to make in the days, weeks, and years to come. And trust me, this is the best decision you could have made in the new year.
In light of your choice, though, I have a few words to impart.
Please excuse my resting bitch face as I cycle through the exercises in my workout; it's nothing personal, I'm only trying to be the most efficient, hard working person I can be. However, don't be afraid to approach me. Eating right, working out, and doing my thing isn't worth it if I'm the only one who benefits. If you have no idea how to work a machine, ask. Need a spotter, ask. Just because the "regulars" are hustling now doesn't mean they haven't been where you are.
Also, please don't pay any attention to me while I'm huffing and puffing on the treadmill. I had as many Christmas cookies as the next gal and I'm trying my hardest not to let it get me down. Heck, jump on the treadmill next to me and we can race.
Keep in mind that everyone has a strong-suit. I prefer lifting weights and doing sprints. Make sure you try every aspect of training to find your favorite. If you keep hopping on the upright bike but hate logging miles, try doing other forms of cardio. That way you'll find something you can stick with. You don't want to be the person who joins the gym for the first month of the year, just to let your new tank tops and running shoes get dusty in your closet when you stop going.
You really do have what it takes to stay committed. I'm guessing you agree, and that's why you started this journey in the first place. Or, you just signed up hoping to get in shape for a certain boy or girl you run into a lot at your favorite hang out spot. This "gym life" thing gets thrown around in a joking manner all over social media, but it really is a lifestyle. It's a choice.
So, don't hesitate to bust through the doors of the gym, wielding your kick-ass gear and displaying your determination. One day you'll be the one the newbies are asking for advice and you'll think back to the day you made the promise to yourself to change your life.
