Where would I be without you?
The cops in my town, you have all taught me so much. Some of you have known me since I was crawling around and staring and pointing at the pretty blue and red lights on the police cars or the fire trucks. Some of you even held me in your lap as I played with the steering wheel and hit the horn as everyone else laughed.
Then again some of you I just met and haven't seen me grow up.
You're just as important as the others.
We recently got four new cops and my bond with them is unbreakable.
The oldest of those four cops is only 6 and a half years older and the youngest is 3 and a half years older. I'm closest with the oldest cop, even though I have my favorite moments with all of them. They're my friends, my family. Any of them would be there in a heartbeat if I needed a favor. Not all cops are bad and not all cops are good.
I work with fourteen of the best police officers.
All my life I have known that they have been watching me; they've made sure I was okay. My dad tells me that all the time.
"The cops have watched over you since day one."
For that I am grateful.
Going off to college I realize that one of the things I truly am going to miss is them. They've been a big part of my life and saying goodbye to them is going to be hard even though I know I'll see them when I get home.
They're the boys in blue. The ones who serve and protect my town with pride and dignity. The ones who made me think about becoming a police officer. They're proud to be here and as I'm saying goodbye to them my heart will break more and more with each goodbye.
But I'll be back. As much as they may want to ( winky face) they can't get rid of me forever.
Whether or not they know it, they mean the world to me. A part of my heart belongs to them. I would do anything for them if they needed it just like they would do the same for me. We keep each other safe.
We have the same intentions. We took an oath.
EMT Oath: Be it pledged as an Emergency Medical Technician, I will honor the physical and judicial laws of God and man. I will follow that regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of patients and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, nor shall I suggest any such counsel. Into whatever homes I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of only the sick and injured, never revealing what I see or hear in the lives of men unless required by law. I shall also share my medical knowledge with those who may benefit from what I have learned.
I will serve unselfishly and continuously in order to help make a better world for all mankind. While I continue to keep this oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life, and the practice of the art, respected by all men, in all times. Should I trespass or violate this oath, may the reverse be my lot. So help me God.
Police Oath: I, ____________________________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the State of New Jersey; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and to the Governments established in the United States and in this State, under the Authority of the people; and that I will faithfully, impartially and justly perform all the duties of the office of ______________________________________________________________________ according to the best of my ability, and that I will not use my office to grant preferential treatment, nor to seek personal gain, favor, or advantage not available to the general public, (so help me, God*).
They're both to help and protect the people. We do it to help the people who need us. We do it for them, we do it for us, we do it for everyone. There is no hesitating and no taking a couple minutes to think about it. It's now or never.
Being in the EMS family gives you a relationship with people you never thought you would have. I am so very glad I joined this family because I don't know what I would do without the people I have in my life now.
So thank you to the best fourteen police officers I could ask for. You've changed me for the better and for that I am grateful. I'll miss you and I'll see you when I come home.
