An Open Letter To Our Mayor Who Endorsed Donald Trump
businessinsider.com

When I first heard the news, I thought it was a joke. How could our mayor possibly support such a distasteful candidate? I checked social media and local news outlets, and then I checked your own website, and sure enough, it was true. You endorsed Donald Trump for President of the United States. But that isn't the issue: It's what you said right after you endorsed him. You said that our community supports him and invited him to come speak in our town.

Mister Mayor, I would like to say in the most respectful way possible that you most certainly may not praise Mr. Trump and his presidential campaign on behalf of us, the citizens in the town which you represent. We elected you into office to be our voice, but your endorsement of Mr. Trump does not reflect how we feel.

I just want to ask you if you know about everything this man has done. Trump supporters love him so much because he says what he thinks. What he thinks could not be farther from how things actually are. His misinformed thoughts, which turn into misinformed words, and, if elected president, would turn into ill-advised actions, are built on a foundation of fear and hatred. He is xenophobic, Islamophobic, homophobic and bigoted. He is vulgar and disrespectful toward women, minorities, the disabled and anyone not as privileged as he has been.

To an audience in Alabama last November, Mr. Trump claimed to have seen thousands and thousands of Muslims dancing and cheering in the streets after the attacks on 9/11. He claimed that videos existed documenting these occurrences. But as we've come to find out, these videos never existed—not to anyone's surprise—because these celebrations never happened. To subsequently bolster his ignorant stance on Islam, Mr. Trump proposed to interdict Muslims from immigrating to the U.S, and furthermore, to create a catalogue of every Muslim living in the United States. How you could support a man with such unconstitutional proposals such as these is beyond belief. I assume that you would agree with me, if instead he decided to discriminate against Roman Catholics.

Mr. Trump also discriminates against African Americans. Don't believe me? Well, let me inform you: Shortly after security physically beat a black activist at a rally, Mr. Trump tweeted an illegitimate statistic from the "Crime Statistics Bureau—San Francisco"—an imaginary bureau that Mr. Trump made up, claiming that 81 percent of white murders were carried out by black perpetrators. To clarify, the FBI states that only 15 percent of whites were killed by blacks, while a large majority were killed by other whites. In a community with a large black population, I cannot understand why you would support a candidate this misinformed on racial issues.

Of all the hundreds of disgusting things Mr. Trump has done in his campaign, the one that most repulsed me was his mocking of a disabled journalist with a condition that made him unable to control movement of his arms. How could anyone, let alone the mayor of our town, say that a man like that is welcome in our community, or wish him well on behalf of thousands of people? It disgusts me and a vast majority of our community that you have invited this unaccepting individual into the place which we call home. We don't want him here. Our country was born of immigrants, our families are made up of different ethnicities and our disabled loved ones deserve to retain that basic human dignity to which each and every person is entitled.

Our community's very heart and soul is built around the world coming together every year in our hometown for the Little League World Series, which welcomes people from all walks of life. How ironic that you could support a candidate so opposed to those very ideals which makes our community so great. Not only does it degrade our community, but it degrades that tradition for which we have become known.

This is a great time of challenge in our country to stand up to oppression and degradation, and a classless, disrespectful man. We are mortified by your endorsement of such a repulsive candidate, and want you to know that our opinion will not change. We do not want him here. He does not represent us. he is not welcome in our community. We will fight to progress instead of regress, and will give everyone the resect they deserve as citizens and hopeful citizens of this great country. Your endorsement is not ours, and we will continue to make that known.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
