An Open Letter To High School Seniors

With only a couple months left until graduation, many High School seniors are anxious to get out of High School and move on to bigger and better things. Whether they are going on to College, or whether they are working right out of high school, High School Seniors can't wait to get out of High School and all of the Drama and hard work. This is my letter to all of those High School Seniors that are anxious to Graduate here in a few months.

Dear High School Seniors,

I once was in the same position that you are in. Graduation seems so close, and you want to finally be able to get out and experience life on your on. You can see sweet freedom and you are so excited to be able to taste the freedom that comes with Graduation. Life after Graduating High School can be so thrilling, such a life experience, and can help you grow in so many ways. Life after High School seems to be so enjoyable. All of the parties at the different Colleges, getting to stay out as late as you want, getting to move away from your parents, it all seems like fun and games, doesn't it?

Life after Graduation can definitely be a great thing, but I want to let you know now that it is no where near as easy as you may think that it may be. Coming from someone who went straight to College after having Graduated High School a year early, life isn't as exciting as it may seem. When going to College, I thought that I was going to have so much fun. I thought I would be able to stay out as late as I want, hang out with whoever I wanted to, and just do whatever whenever I wanted. When reality set in though, I realized that College life wasn't what I thought it would be.

College life is fun, and I have learned a lot since I graduated High School and came to College, but I definitely am not having the experience that I thought that I would be having. Classes are so much harder than I was expecting. I knew that College Classes would be difficult to some degree, but I didn't realize just how hard it was. There were classes that were being offered in College that I thought were just "add ons" to high school classes that I thought that I would be able to do so well in, that I ended up not doing as well as I thought I would do in. I had the mindset that I would be able to get straight A's in College with very little effort. I was so wrong. I work hard on my homework, and still have difficulty getting the A's that I thought that I would be getting.

College Life also isn't about the partying and hanging out with whoever you want to whenever you want to, and staying out as late as you want. There are colleges out there that have curfew for the underclassmen to help make sure that they underclassmen are in the dorms doing their best to make sure that they are doing their homework or trying to get a decent nights sleep before having to go to more classes again the next day. There are also so many people that thought that college was all about going to parties that were shocked that they rarely ever went out because they were stuck doing homework. A lot of College Students, though they are able to hang out with friends fairly often, they are usually doing homework together, or don't get to do as much together as they thought that they would be able to.

It seems like a lot of the students who decide to move away from Home to go to College end up missing home a lot more than they thought that they would. Even the students that may not have had the best home life end up missing different aspects of home while they are away at school. Moving away from home, even though it may give you some freedom, may give you more freedom than you previously thought and more freedom than what you may want.

College Life is definitely difficult, but it is worth all of the Hard work. I don't want you to be discouraged and think that College Life isn't for you just because it isn't going to be as easy as you may have thought it was going to be, because College is amazing. I just want to let you know that, though you are anxious to want to finally get out of High School, cherish the moments that you have in High School. I always thought that people were joking when they said that they missed High School after they graduated and thought that I would never miss High School whenever I left. I realize now just how right everyone was about it though. I miss High School so much. I wish I wouldn't have tried to rush to get out of High School. Though I love College, and I am learning so much, I miss how lenient everything was back in High School. Don't rush your time in High School, because you really will miss High School, no matter how much you think you won't miss it.

Lots of Love to the High School Seniors,

From the College Senior

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
