An Open Letter To The Grandparent Taken Too Soon

Dear you,

I miss you, and I wish I would've shown you my appreciation more. The day you were taken will forever be etched in my brain. I have a lot of things I have been meaning to tell you, so I hope this letter will reach you in Heaven.

Having you around as I grew up was a blessing. I never really noticed how big of a role you played in my life until you were no longer a phone call away. All those years, you were a role model, friend, mentor and storyteller to me. You taught me lessons about life, supported me in school and always helped me out when I needed something. No matter how short of notice, you were willing to watch me while my parents ran errands or bring my lunchbox to school when I forgot it. I regret letting all of your kindness and hard work go almost thankless, but I hope you know how much it all meant to me.

I want you to know that family holidays and traditions are definitely not the same without you. You were always a smiling face that I could count on to keep everyone behaving and getting along. The selflessness you showed in regards to your family was inspiring. While your stubbornness may have driven us all crazy sometimes, it was part of who you are. I was never quite sure how you juggled keeping everyone in line, the house clean, and working, but I'll just add that to you being such a figure of admiration.

I think of you a lot, everyday to be exact. From starting my morning with a black cup of coffee to occasionally playing Words with Friends, your memory stays alive. I pour my cup of coffee and think of how it never failed to start your day off, so I figure it can do the same for me. It deeply saddens me to realize that you won't be in attendance of my major life events, but then I remember that you'll be watching from the best seats available.

When I finish the semester with good grades or get a new job, I always want to call and tell you. I could always count on you to be proud. Instead, I now think of how you had some sort of role in those occurrences taking place. I embrace your memory and I cherish the times we had together. You taught me to be strong and persevere when I face challenges. You play a major part in who I am today. Having you taught me to laugh, smile and live in the moment. Losing you taught me to smile when reminiscing, laugh through the tears and be thankful for each moment I live in.

I know you're probably up there eating a bag of popcorn while looking down on me writing this, and I hope it makes you smile like I do when I think of the times we shared. One day we will meet again. Until then I have one request: please keep watching over me. Knowing I have a special guardian angel up there makes losing you just a little bit easier to come to terms with.

Love always,
Me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
