Sisters by chance, friends by choice.

An open letter to the girls who became my family away from family

When moving four hours away for college, my biggest fear was that it would be impossible to make friends that would take the place of the family and friends I was leaving behind at home. When I went through sorority recruitment though, I quickly realized this task would be easier. I met so many amazing girls that I hoped would soon be my sisters. I immediately connected with three girls in particular. We gradually started hanging out more and more and now we are inseparable. Being away from home has definitely been one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, but you girls make that a little easier. Each of you holds a special place in my heart and a specific role in my life, but I feel like every college friend group requires one or more of these types of friends:

First there is the mom, this is the friend who takes care of you when you are sick, makes sure you are eating when you are upset, and reminds you that binge watching Friends the week before finals is not the best decision.

There is also the funny one, this friend always lightens the mood with her sarcastic comebacks and hilarious jokes always made at the wrong time. She can make you smile even when you feel like the world is crumbling around you and there is nothing left to do but cry.

Next there is the vault. This is that one friend that you can go to with absolutely anything and she will give you the best advice possible but also never blab your secrets around. Whether you got drunk and made out with the worst guy possible, or if you need to hide a body or two (just kidding...), she will always lend an ear, a hand, and sealed lips.

The last personality that every friend group needs is the glue. This is the level headed girl of the group. Whenever there is an argument between friends, she tries to see both sides and help everyone to make up. She reminds you that you are a family and that its okay to not always like each other but at the end of the day you will always love one another.

So with that being said, I want to say thank you to my "mom". For keeping me on track with school, always being there with a box of tissues when I have a cold, and making sure that I go to bed at a decent time every night. I want to say thank you to my "jokester" for always turning my frown upside down, for giving me the best jokes to tell me children in the future, and for always reminding me not to take life so seriously. Lastly I want to say thank you to my "vault" for holding all my secrets inside, for not judging me for my past, and for always being there for me to cry to when life gets too hard to handle.

I love each of you for a million reasons that I couldn't possibly put into words, but the thing I love most is that I have you by my side for this crazy roller coaster ride we call college. You make the hard times easier and the good times greater. I love you so much, fam.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
