An Open Letter To My Best (Furry) Friend Back Home
Emma Trentanove

Dear [Insert Dog’s Name Here],

How are ya, buddy? I know it’s been a long time since I’ve seen you. I’m sorry I haven’t been there to take you on long walks through our park or throw tennis balls across the yard. I know you’ve missed me, and I’ve missed you too.

I think about you whenever I’m outside and I see someone else with their best friend. It makes me sad to think that it’ll be a while until I’ll be able to see you, but I certainly haven’t forgotten about you. It may seem as though I like to leave you to find other friends, but there is no other friend like you. Saying goodbye to you last time was hard for me, and I know it was for you too. I could see that look in your eyes—you knew it would be a while until we met again.

I’m sorry that I don’t live with you for the whole year anymore. I know that me going back and forth is confusing for you, but that doesn’t mean that I love you any less. You’re my best friend and you’ve always been there for me. You know when I’m upset because you always want to be petted. It took me leaving to realize just how much you use to cheer me up. It’s hard to find a person who is equivalent to your caring spirit, because you’re one of the most genuine friends I’ve ever had. Your loving smile and happy wagging tail never cease to bring a smile to my face, and for that, I thank you.

I miss rubbing your belly while you lick my hand or fall asleep—sometimes on top of me. I miss feeding you my table scraps even when Mom says not to. I miss seeing you jump for joy whenever I come home. You’re the one who is always the most excited to see me. I miss how you’re always happy and wanting to play. You keep me alive and smiling whenever I’m around you. You’re the greatest friend I could ever ask for. I know you love me unconditionally and that you’ll be there, happily awaiting my return.

How is it possible that I could have found such a wonderful and loving friend like you? I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have been able to share so many memories with you—and I know we have many more to come. They say that a friendship like ours will never die—and I believe them. You’ve given me more than a friendship—you’ve given me a love like no other.

You’re a blessing to my family and a wonderful best friend. Thank you for never leaving my side and making me realize the pure and simply happiness of being alive. I can’t wait to open the front door and see your smiling face waiting for me—it’ll be as though I never left.

Sincerely,

Your Best (Non-Furry) Friend

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
