Dear Best Friend,
It absolutely breaks my heart to watch you go through this. Your family is my family, and it feels like I’ve lost someone too. But, my job for you has just begun. While people you haven’t spoken to in years reach out with well-thought sympathy and love, I am the one you reach for. I will be here to catch you. While you put on a brave face in public, I am the one you can break down to in private. I will be there through every tear-stained moment. I will help you through the darkest time of your life.
Please don’t shut me out. You don’t have to be strong or brave for me, I will love you endlessly. I will love you through the times you cry out to God in anger, asking Him why. I will love you through the time of depression, when nothing seems to make sense. I will love you through the times you push away to protect yourself, and I will love you the same when you open back up to me. I will always love you. Your life is changing as you learn to live without this person, and I want you to know that I am ready. I am ready to endure the big, the bad and the ugly. I understand that there are parts of this journey that you have to walk alone, but I will be your biggest cheerleader. I will rejoice with you in the smallest of victories. You can do this, I believe in you, and you are not alone.
You have been there for me through every big moment, and I will be there for you. It’s time for me to prove that I am the friend I said I would be. That every time I texted you at 2 a.m. just to say how grateful I am for you and that I love you, I meant it. That every time we had the, “what would I do without you,” conversation, I meant it when I said you’d never have to find out. I won’t lie to you, or sugar-coat the truth. The simple fact is that this sucks, and it’s not fair. You shouldn’t have to be going through this. I can’t take the pain away, but I can stand with you in the storm and we can learn to dance in the rain together.
