An Open Letter To My Freshmen Year Squad

I expected to make new friends in college, but I never expected to make a new family

Thank you for literally keeping me sane for the past nine months. I can wholeheartedly say I have no idea what I would have done without you all by my side. We’ve talked about it countless times, but I don’t think any of us actually has considered what our lives would have been like had we not made the choice we had a year earlier.

If I chose a different school, or one of you chose a different hall to live in or if we made different connections with different people that first week, things would be so, well, different. If I didn’t walk out of my first college party with you guys holding my hand, I probably wouldn’t have made it home that night. Or if I didn’t have you all to help me pick my recruitment outfit, I probably wouldn’t have been as confident on preference night. If you didn’t have me, how would you guys get to literally anywhere off campus? Life sure would have been different if I hadn’t found you, and I’m glad I did because my first year wouldn’t have been nearly as memorable without the four of you.

Thanks for eating pizza at 10 p.m. with me. Thanks for watching a different show every day of the week with me (and never missing a single episode). Thanks for the BDubs, Starbucks and Dairy Queen runs. Thanks for the cuddle puddles and the countless hours you’ve spent listening to me complain about just about everything in my life. Thanks for making sure I never have to go anywhere by myself and that I never spend a weekend alone. Thanks for making me get out of bed on days I dreaded it. Thanks for the advice and the laughs and the stories I’ll have for years to come.

The first week we moved in, I already said I was dreading moving out and now that time has come. We have literally become inseparable, and everyone knows us together rather than apart. We have countless inside jokes (and a book with them all written down). We know each other's favorite soda, favorite candy and of course, each other’s favorite snack (but who doesn’t love hot Cheetos?) We have a secret knock and know each other’s schedules by heart. We know each other’s deepest secrets and biggest flaws. I never thought I could get so close to someone till I met you. Thanks for the memories and being the best squad I could ever ask for. Though freshmen year is ending and we will go our separate ways, you’ll forever be in my heart. ILY5Ever.

With Love,

The fifth member of the squad

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
