An Open Letter To My First College Friends

Starting my freshman year, I thought that I would have hardly any friends because I am so quiet and am unfortunately stuck with that commuter life. But then I met you incredible girls. You have seen me at my best and my worst, and for some reason you still choose to stick around. I have only known most of you for about eight weeks but it feels like I have known you for most of my life. We all just clicked when we met. Even though it’s only been two months since we first met, I have so much to thank you all for.

1. Thank you for seeing past my first week awkwardness.

I have absolutely no sense of direction and was almost late to all of my classes. I probably looked so lost, weird and out of breath when I was walking in, so thank you for actually talking to me and assuring me that I wasn’t the only one who was lost.

2. Thank you for experiencing that homecoming concert with me.

From being pushed around by random guys, getting cut in line by huge groups of people, to being stuck behind tall people and getting twerked on by some girl I have never seen before, you were there for all of it. Thanks for being there for all those uncomfortable situations. You laughed with me when it was all happening, and we still laugh about it now.

3. Thank you for telling me that I can do anything I put my mind to.

You have helped push me out of my comfort zone and I am so grateful for that. Whether its telling me I can totally eat that whole pizza or encouraging me to go up in front of a room full of strangers and read one of my poems, you’ve pushed me to do things I never thought I could do before. You tell me that no matter how crazy my dreams are, I can do it and nothing will stand in my way.

4. Thank you for accepting me as I am.

I’m pretty weird, I think we all know that. But you are one of the first groups of friends that I have had that has never asked me to change who I am or tone down the weirdness. In fact, you encourage it. You all love my ridiculous hiccups and never get annoyed by them. I absolutely love you for that. You laugh when they happen at the worst possible times and make me feel less awkward about it. You even accept the fact that I like country music, which never happens.

5. Thank you for being my free personal therapists.

No matter what time of day it is, no matter what I need to talk about, I know I have a group of some fabulous ladies ready to listen to me. I don’t know how you do it, but you all know the best advice to give me at the time that I need it most. Sometimes, you might not know what to say, but you make sure I know that I have someone that will listen to me. Thank you for listening to me complain about the little things, like how the lady at Dunkin' made my coffee wrong and for making it feel like something completely valid to be upset about. But more important than that, thank you for not being afraid of putting me in my place and telling me I’m wrong to be upset with someone over something.

6. Thank you for getting me through my classes.

Whether it's God awful mythology or that writing class that puts us to sleep, thanks for keeping me from going insane. You let me know that I’m not the only one that’s just about ready to jump off of a cliff. You helped me study for that terrible midterm and you edited my paper until it was practically perfect. If it wasn’t for you girls reminding me about our papers I probably would be failing some classes. So thanks for keeping me in good academic standing, you rock.

But most importantly, thank you for being you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
