An Open Letter to My Electric Kettle

Dear Electric Kettle,

I can’t express how much I appreciate you. You have been there for me when all my other appliances haven’t. When the microwave didn’t heat my cold tea that had been left untouched during studying, I could count on you to add boiling water to warm it up to the perfect temperature. When my fridge was unplugged and my milk went bad, you stood solid in the electric socket.

You have seen me through many meals during my days in college. From the oatmeal used to wake me up on an early Saturday morning to the kraft mac and cheese that I was too lazy to microwave, you have perfected my college diet. I can’t thank you enough for helping me cook my food, so that I can get the energy I need to keep hitting the books.

What has really made you the MVP of my college career is your participation in making my coffee. We both know that adding water to the instant coffee grounds and putting it in the microwave isn’t going to cut it. Your boiling temperature of 212℉ is what makes my homemade pretend lattes the absolute best. What you do gets me through back to back two hour classes. It also wakes me up at 5:30 am when I need to finish the reading from last night before my 8:30 class.

I see you main purpose as providing the hot water I need to prepare my nutrients, but you also provide your services for so many other things. Things like hot water to combine with soap to scrub that stain out of my favorite t-shirt. Or providing some warm water to a basin that I can use to give myself a pedicure (because I can’t afford a real one). Or maybe it's just to drink straight up hot water because I’ve had a sore throat for three days straight and I really want to sleep, but I need to soothe my inflamed throat.

You do it all and you ask for no thanks in return. So, thank you electric kettle for having my back, and thank you mom for investing in the most important appliance anyone could have in their dorm room.

Sincerely,

A Grateful College Student

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
