An Open Letter To My Eighth Grade Self

I just need to tell my smelly 13-year-old self some things.

An Open Letter To My Eighth Grade Self

Dear 13-year-old Timmy,

This is coming to you from the future. First of all, chill the f*ck out. Let's face it, you're pretty f*cking weird. The things that you think of in your head are things that should not be brought to the attention of others.

That being said, a lot of things are going to change for you very soon. Once you enter high school, it is going to be way different. It might be a little lonely, but just know that you're going to make life long friends. The friends you have now are not going to be with you by the time you graduate high school, and that's a good thing. It is a very good thing. These friends will be here for the long haul, which is something you need.

The only thing that might come as a surprise is that you will start to dress better. No more Under Armor t-shirts and lacrosse shorts, and no more mullet. Thank the lord honestly because people won't see you as the fat weird kid. They will see you as the chubby weird kid with style. Also, deodorant is your friend.

Your state of mind will change, as well. In high school, the desire you have to hang out with the 'popular' kids will quickly fade. You will start to see the people who you wanted to be friends with, as genuinely horrible people. I mean not all of them are horrible, but some of them are. Your view of popularity in general will change. You won't give a sh*t what anyone else is doing. To be honest, you really don't believe in popularity anymore. To you, it is so middle school to want to chase something as ridiculous as popularity.

Also, I hate to break it to you, but you won't be going to Yale like Rory Gilmore. You will learn that you actually have to work for your grades in high school. It's going to suck and your grades will sink, and mom and dad are going to get real mad, but you'll end up at a place that will make you endlessly happy.

The people who make fun of you, don't really do it anymore. You were kind of a target back in the day, but it seems to have fizzled out. No one really cares about what you are doing. People will be mean in middle school, but they get cut the sh*t by high school and realize that it's not worth it to put someone else down. Or at least put you down.

You're a pretty smart kid. You might not think it, but you are very street smart. School is going to suck because you don't really want to be there and nothing is interesting to you. That doesn't change.

The last thing I want to tell you is to stand up for yourself. Everyone is going to be telling you what to do and how to do it. Don't let anyone control and manipulate your life. There is nothing worse than realizing you are being manipulated. Tell them to f*ck off.

Sincerely,

A very happy future Timmy

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
