An Open Letter To My College Pet

You'll always be my favorite fur-baby.

An Open Letter To My College Pet
Maria Kimble

Dear Binx,

After sorority meetings, school work and social activities, there is absolutely no room for anything else. Who would think that adding a pet to the mess would be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made? I know college is stressful enough without adopting a fur-baby, but I couldn’t imagine going through this without you. Knowing when I get home from class that you will be waiting at the door gets me through my day. I really wish you could read this so you knew how much you really mean to me.

I want to thank you for always being my listening ear. I can always count on you to listen to me complaining about a procrastinated projects; even when you encourage nap time by batting at my iPad. I can always count on you to listen to my disgust about the recent elimination on the bachelorette. It is very comforting to know that I can unload my feelings onto a cuddly fluff ball that will love me unconditionally as long as I refill their food bowl.

I know I am not the best pet owner, thank you for understanding. I still feel bad about that time I accidentally locked you in the closet before I went to class. I was just trying to find my new sweater, and I didn’t see you sneak in from behind. I made sure to give you extra treats that day, because I didn’t want you to hate me forever. Thank you for still cuddling with me that night while we watched our favorite cheesy romance comedy. I’m sorry for the nights I decide to go out with my friends instead of staying home with you instead. Even when I stumble through the foyer, your comforting meows remind me that someone cares if I come home. One day I will be the pet owner you deserve, I promise.

Even though you can’t talk back to me, I know you understand when something is wrong. Thank you for being my cuddle buddy on days I had to skip class because of the flu. It made me feel less guilty knowing I got to spend the whole day with my furry best friend. Thank you for not judging me when I drank a whole bottle of wine and ate a pint of Ben and Jerry’s because I was arguing with my boyfriend. You laid by my side through every bite.

It’s crazy to think that I was lucky enough to find my furry soul mate. You make me feel like the luckiest pet owner out there. I wish you could hear how much I brag about you to my friends. I wish you realized how I jump to the chance to show your adorable baby pictures to strangers. I can go on forever about how you are the best cat in the world and no others can compare. They smile and comment on how soft your coat looks, but they will never understand how much you mean to me.

In the end, I want to thank you for being my best friend. I have never met someone else who will love me this unconditionally. I am not sure what I have done to deserve the love that you give me, but I wouldn’t trade you for all of the oreo cookies in the world. Thank you for loving me more than you love watching the birds outside our window. Thank you for giving a damn about me when I feel lonely sitting in my apartment. When I picked you out of the box outside my local supermarket, I would've never guessed that you would be this important to me. I love you so much.

Love always,

Mom

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
