An Open Letter To My Long-Distance College Bestie

How is it possible to know someone for less than a year and be more attached to them than people you've known your whole life?

Dear College Bestie,

I remember the exact day we hung out for the first time—all the nerves, hope, and pure curiosity about how you and I would get along. Fast forward to now, and I cannot imagine not talking to you every day. You have seen me at my best and at my worst. You have seen me grow in every capacity and also take a few steps back sometimes. I have seen you grow and develop into a person who learns to love themselves more and more every day.

I feel so privileged and blessed to have found my "person" in every sense so fast in college. From the night in's to the night out's, to the tears, the laughs, the embarrassing moments, the times when we were there for each other, and the times where distance truly has made my heart grow fonder.

Quarantine and our college semester getting cut short broke my heart, I remember feeling devastated that we wouldn't be able to do all we wanted to with us both being at home now. However, this time away from you only reminds me that you truly are my person.

With every check-in, impromptu FaceTime session, and letter, I was consistently reminded that you are here to stay. Back in my mind, I was so scared that perhaps us being so far away now would mean we would distance throughout this time, but just the opposite has occurred. You have remembered every big event I've had, and you have stepped up your game to love and support me just the way I needed to be.

I have tried to do the same, to let you grow and experience life and be there for you through it all. Never have I felt so comfortable and content with friendship before, and that's all thanks to you. Every day I am learning new things about you, and I am so excited to be able to learn more about how you are and what events in your life have shaped you to be the person you are today. I couldn't be more proud to be your friend, but I also am most proud to just know someone like you.

So, to conclude:

Thank you for it all, for being here, for being my other half, and for being there for me throughout it all. You inspire me to be better, love more, and try harder always.

Thank you for proving to me you are a friend for life. My parents ask about you more than they do anyone else in my life.

I cannot wait till I see you again, but in the meantime, I will go through our old memories and plan the ones we will have once school is back in session.

So once again, thank you for it all. I am counting down the days, but for now, I will be content planning our weddings via Pinterest.

Love you always,

Amitoj

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
