From the moment I stepped on campus my freshman year, I couldn't wait to finally be a part of a sorority, have hundreds of new sisters and friends and join an organization on campus. I didn't know anything about the chapters at my university so the recruitment process was one of much confusion and anxiety. I prayed for God's blessing on my decisions and for His will. Unfortunately, I found that Greek life wasn't for me, although I still learned a few things a long the way.
First and foremost, joining a chapter doesn't mean you lose your identity as an individual. Many people say that you are your letters, but I believe that you are you. Be yourself and always be open and honest about the things you value. Don't lose sight of the things you love, the things you stand for, the things you desire to do, and most importantly, don't lose sight of your faith. It's easy to conform and to be persuaded by individuals you look up to. Stand firm in who you are and what makes you unique, and that is your relationship in Christ.
God has a plan. Keep your eyes on the one who holds your future in His hands. God always has a plan for you. He knows your next steps before you take them and he knows the next word you will speak before you say it. Allow yourself to surrender your worries, anxiety and fears on him during this time and he will light your path. If it is in His will, it will be.
Remember that you are enough. Recruitment can be a taxing process and at times it may make you feel less than. There's always going to be someone prettier, better dressed, more fit, etc. But the identity that you have in Christ is the most important trait you posses. You are beautifully and wonderfully made. Our heavenly Father calls you His and he desires for you to feel empowered because you are you and he formed you in His hands.
Rely on God and lean on your friends and family. Having someone to talk to and having a support system makes not only the recruitment process a lot less stressful but your whole first year in general. Lean on Jesus and pray for His will. He has you protected and will not lead you astray if you rely on Him.
If you are like me and don't attend a Christian university, remember that you will be blessed with a mission field. You have many opportunities from even the first day of recruitment to be a light in a dark world. Be bold in your faith.
And if not, He is still good. This powerful statement is both scary yet comforting. She that reads truth reminds us that God doesn't promise to save us from the flames. But he has promised to be with us as we walk through the fire. Things don't always work out according to our plan and we don't always get what we want. There may be times of hardship and disappointment during this process. But no matter the results, remember always that you serve God, and will praise Him in the storm.
Last but not least, have fun! Meet new people and enjoy the process. Worry less and pray more. Trust that God will go before you and show you the path he has planned.
