An Open Letter To My Best Friend
Maya Rogers

Dear best friend,

I cannot even begin to put into words how thankful I am to have you in my life. I would have never thought that meeting you a few years ago would lead us to such an amazing friendship. You are the most caring human being that’s ever crossed paths with me. I wish everyone was like you, because this world would be a MUCH better place. Throughout the years, nearly everyone has walked in and out of my life. They left me behind and never thought to look back for a second. But out of everyone, you stayed. That proved to me that you genuinely care, and that’s why you hold such an important part in my life. You’re my other half, and I wouldn’t want to have it any other way. There are so many things I could thank you for... But here is just a start:

Thank you for those deep conversations.

I love getting the text, “Want me to pick you up and we can go for a ride and listen to music?” Those nights where we just park the car and talk for hours means so much to me. I love having someone I can talk to about anything and everything. Whether it was about boys or about college, you always knew exactly what to say. I cherish little moments like this because it makes us even closer (If that’s possible).

Thank you for always being honest.

Even if I don’t always want to hear it. I appreciate that you always tell me things from your honest perspective and keep me in check. I used to think that whenever your opinion didn’t match mine, that you weren’t on my side. But after getting to know you, I know now that you say these things because you want me to see the whole picture. Whenever I’m upset or confused, you tell me your thoughts and it makes me take a step back. This way, I’m not so quick to assume or get angry (especially at things that aren’t worth it). It’s so hard to find honest people, and I’m glad you’re one of them.

Thank you for those nights where we eat our feelings.

I can name so many nights where we went down to your kitchen and ate everything in sight. You didn’t make me feel bad about eating ice cream because you’d ask to have some. It’s so easy to tell when one of us isn’t OK, and we know exactly what foods/snacks will cheer us up. It’s truly a blessing to have someone who loves food as much as I do.

Thank you for never giving up on me.

Trust me, there were times when I wanted to give up on myself. You would always send me motivational texts that took me years (not literally) to read. You would tell me that there’s so much positivity in the worst circumstances. You gave me reasons to keep pushing forward in life, so that I didn’t end up throwing my life away.

Thank you for being a true friend.

I have waited 18 years to find someone who would always have my back like you. I know I can always count on you for anything. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be who I am today. Keep being that ray of sunshine that makes everyone’s lives a little better. I can’t wait to look back when we’re both married with kids, and see how far our friendship has come. I will always be grateful for the memories and lessons you’ve given me.

Here’s to many more years of friendship. Thank you for being my person.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
