Dear You,
Hi. It’s been awhile since we last saw each other. While we are both in our second year of college, I think we can say that our relationship has taught us a lot. In our time as a long distance couple, some days have been better than others. Sometimes I miss you so much it hurts, while other times having a phone call with you makes my entire day. When we started this journey, everybody we knew thought we were crazy, and that we were setting ourselves up for failure but we both knew deep down that they were wrong. And we were right.
Thank you for putting up with me getting angry with you. I know it is not always easy when I tell you that everything is your fault. Or when my expectations of you are completely unrealistic. I just want you to know that I never mean it when I get mad at you; I just get too frustrated and do not know how to express myself. Thank you for understanding that nothing I say when I am annoyed is actually meant to hurt you.
Thank you for being my rock. Being somebody’s rock is difficult normally, let alone when you go to school 300 miles away from someone. But you somehow manage to balance dealing with my emotions, while managing your own. Thank you for listening as I complain about the homework I have to do, all while balancing my social life and internships. Your calm demeanor is what helps me get through my little meltdowns. I know your day is even busier than mine, but I am incredibly grateful that you still patiently listen to me freaking out anyway.
Thank you for making time for me. I know that both of our lives can get extremely hectic. Thank you for calling me when you have a funny story you want to tell me, or texting me and asking me about my day. Thank you for also understanding that we are both independent people, and it is okay if we are not in constant communication 24 hours a day. I am glad we both realize that it is OK to live our own lives, but coexist together at the same time.
Most importantly, I want to thank you for helping me grow into the person that I am today. Being in a long distance relationship has truly taught me the value of patience. It has also shown me the importance of trying to reach a compromise, as opposed to expecting one of us to consistently get our way. You have helped me realize that I do not need somebody there to hold my hand every second of the day, but that having a cheerleader on the sidelines makes all the difference.
Thank you for accompanying me on this wild ride. No matter how hard it might get, I honestly could not see myself being in a long distance relationship with anybody but you. Thank you for the great memories, and here’s to many more.
Love always,
Me
