An Open Letter To 16-Year-Old Me

Dear 16-Year-Old Me,

There are so many things that I want you to know, but I think the first bit of advise is that your family should always be your priority. No matter what you do, they will always be there to catch you when you fall, and they have proven this time after time. I understand that sometimes you feel like nobody listens to you, but everyone in your household does the best they can while dealing with a hormonal diva so give them credit when it's due. They just aren't able to keep up with all of the drama you have chosen to immense yourself in. And don't worry, when you mess up and don't want to tell anybody, I guarantee that your grandma will be there to bail you out of trouble. And when your mom finds out (because for some reason she always does) your grandma will be there to remind your mom that she did the same thing when she was your age.

Dealing with friends is something that can be time consuming and stressful. It can take years before you find out who your true friends are. Luckily for you, the fabulous age of 16 is when you realize who your friends are. It will be crazy to go from having many friends to having just a small group of friends, but you will be the happiest you have ever been. While your friends may not always be there for an adventure as you get older, they are always just a phone call away.

The best advice that I can give you is that life goes on. You will move past everything that happened when you were in high school. You will move past the embarrasing hair colors. You will move past all of your mistakes because there will always be something bigger and better around the corner. Never regret something you've done because it has helped shape you into the person you will become. So stop caring what everybody else thinks of you, and just do the things that will make you happy. At the end of the day, your opinion is the only one that counts.

Love,

Your 20-Year-Old Self

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
