Yup… Yet, another movie no one has heard of that more people should check out.
"Hunt for the Wilder People" is directed by a man that I like to call Wes Anderson 2.0 because his name is honestly hard to spell and his style looks a lot like Wes Anderson to me.
And going into this movie, I didn’t really know what it was, I saw the trailer once before I saw the actual movie, so I just pretty much went in to this movie blind. The director of this movie directed a movie called "What We Do in the Shadows," which was so underrated. Seriously, that movie was hilarious, so when I found out it was from the same director, I was pretty pumped. Let me tell you the movie delivered. I love this movie so much.
Plotline is about a young, troubled and misunderstood boy, who gets taken in by a foster family and then eventually runs away. The foster father finds him and they both go out running into the wilderness and a giant man hunt starts out for them.
What makes this movie so great is its style. It’s very Wes Anderson and honestly, I don’t think I can see this movie having any other style than that because had it not had that style, I feel like the movie would have gone horribly wrong. The movie is hilarious and beautiful to look at and had it just be a mellow dramatic drama about a boy and his foster father connecting it would have really fell flat. But luckily, it went a completely different route.
The kid and the foster father have excellent chemistry with one another. They play off each other so well and each one has a great joke to share, and as the film kept going I just kept feeling so attached to these characters. I wanted them to succeed in the end, but then I started questioning whether I actually wanted that -- it kept turning the tables on me and I loved it!
This movie has so much energy, everything is happening all at once and while the film does allow you to breathe from time to time, you still want more because you get so invested in the witty dialogue and the chemistry between everyone. You honestly feel like you’re a part of this trip and you feel like you’ve gotten to know everything around you. That’s how much this film is moving. I honestly couldn’t believe how much fun I had here.
If I had to nitpick, then I would say maybe the film kind of slowed down in one scene? I mean, it is a great scene, but maybe just trim it down a little bit it would have been perfect.
Overall, "Hunt for the Wilder People" is one of my favorite of the year no doubt. It’s in my top five of the year. It honestly surprised me so much how much I loved it because I went in blind. I definitely recommend people see this at some point in their life.
