It's Been Exactly One Year Since I Graduated High School, What Have I Learned?
Megan Bertrand

My little sister is graduating from high school this week and I was hit with the realization that I was in her shoes exactly a year ago. This time last year my hair was dyed a bright red (a post-breakup impulsive decision), and all I could think about was my impending future.

For the first time in my life, my future was the unexpected. In grade school I always knew what the next year of my life would like, it was predictable, but this time my predictions about the future were only met with high levels of uncertainty.

So here I am one year later. My hair is short, my major is changed, and I can't help but question: what did I learn? Am I the person I thought college would make of me?

College was exactly what they tell you it will be, a fun roller coaster ride with loops that turn you upside down, and drops that take your breath away. I learned to admit that I have dreams and I want them to become my reality.

That's why I changed my major and now study creative writing. I also came to an understanding about self-awareness and how important that is. You need to know who you are before you can decide to do anything with your life.

College teaches you things about yourself that you never knew before, things like you're way more like your mom than you originally anticipated and, as it turns out, you really don't like going to parties after all.

I think most importantly going to college makes you realize you are not the only person living in this world. The classes you take will change the way you see the world, because the world is so much bigger than your hometown and has more issues that need fixing than you thought it did.

If you're afraid to go to college, trust me I get it. It's normal to fear the unexpected, but the unexpected is the point of life. You're not supposed to know what will happen tomorrow. If you did, what would be the point?

College is the time to learn how all the pieces of yourself fit into place. This is the time in your life that's designated to discovery. So to all the high school graduates out there, enjoy this time and expect the unexpected, it'll surprise you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
