We all have those shows that we become completely obsessed with. We reference the characters on a daily basis as if we actually know them personally. When they cry, we cry. When they laugh, we laugh. We follow them on their journey through life, feeling as if we truly did experience it all with them.
For me, there's not too many shows that I become so completely engrossed with and that I believe I really do learn something from them. Let me tell you though, if you haven't already watched the series, then go watch "One Tree Hill." I promise, you will experience a concoction of emotions from people you feel you have developed a personal relationship with, all to be reminded at the end that it was just a TV show.
Let me just share with you a few of the numerous life lessons I obtained from watching this life changing series.
1. "There’s no shame in being afraid. We’re all afraid. What you gotta do is figure out what you’re afraid of because when you put a face on it, you can beat it. Better yet, you can use it."
-Coach Whitey Durham
Fear. Like, Coach Whitey said, we all have fears, small ones and big ones. It's inevitable to not be afraid in life, but we can't let fear stop us from taking chances and opportunities. Face your fears. In the end, you'll be more thankful you did, rather than regret that you didn't.
2. "You ever heard the expression ‘The best things in life are free?’ Well that expression is true.’ Every once in a while, people step up, they rise above themselves. sometimes they surprise you and sometimes they fall short. Life is funny sometimes. It can push pretty hard but if you look close enough, you can find hope in the words of children, in the bars of the song and in the eyes of someone you love. And if you’re lucky, if you’re the luckiest person on this entire planet, the person you love decides to love you back."
-Nathan Scott
Such wise words from the bad boy gone good, heart throb. It's the little things in life that really mean the most. For Nathan, he found hope in the words of a child, for me, I found hope in the words that a person so eloquently wrote for a group of actors to convey to an audience which became a hit series.
3. "Have you ever wondered what marks our time here? If one life can really make an impact on the world, or if the choices we make matter? I believe they do. And I believe that one man can change many lives. For better, or worse."
-Lucas Scott
Every single person in this world, no matter how old, how small, what race or what gender, has a purpose. They will make an impact with the life they live. Whether that impact is positive or negative, or on one person or five hundred people, they will have an impact on this world in one way or another. It only takes one person to make a difference. How will you impact this world?
4. "You can choose to blame your circumstances on fate or bad luck or bad choices. Or you can fight back. Things aren’t always going to be fair in the real world. That’s just the way it is. But for the most part, you get what you give. Rest of your life is being shaped right now. With the dreams you chase, the choices you make, and the person you decide to be. The rest of your life is a long time. And the rest of your life starts right now."
-Haley James
Life is not fair. End of story. Be intentional with your choices and the decisions you make. Be kind and go after your dreams. Life doesn't start in ten years, after high school or after college. Life starts today. This very second.
5. "It’s not about who I am, okay. It’s about who they are. They are people who hate, and they divide, and they feed off of people who don’t fight back. Yeah, I could laugh this off, but what about the girl who can’t? Who’s gonna help her. Silence only makes them stronger."
-Peyton Sawyer
People need people. If you see someone wronged, but simply just stood by and didn't say anything or act on it, you are just as much at fault for the harm done by allowing it to happen. Be brave and stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves. Sometimes people just need to see a courageous act to be reminded that they too can be strong.
6. "I’ve come to the conclusion that if having things turn out the way you wanted them to is a measure of a successful life, then some would say I’m a failure. The important thing is not to be bitter over life’s disappointments. Learn to let go of the past. And recognize that every day won’t be sunny, and when you find yourself lost in the darkness and despair, remember it’s only in the black of night you see the stars. And those stars will lead you back home. So don’t be afraid to make mistakes, to stumble and fall, cause most of the time, the greatest rewards come from doing the things that scare you the most. Maybe you’ll get everything you wish for. Maybe you’ll get more than you ever could have imagined. Who knows where life will take you. The road is long and in the end, the journey is the destination."
-Coach Whitey Durham
Need I even explain this one? Another popular quote from the ever-wise, good ol' Coach Whitey. Just let it sink in.
I could go on and on with such compassionate and deeply honest scenes and quotes from the "One Tree Hill" cast. Each episode conveys such brilliant lessons.
So, if you're needing a good series to start on Netflix, *ding ding ding* you have a winner! You won't regret it. Well, maybe, but that's just because you'll be too obsessed to turn the show off.
